HomeMy WebLinkAbout2015-01-08 Special Minutes - City Council and Planning Commission: Tukwila International Boulevard Element Joint Work SessionCity Of Tukwila • City Council Work Session: Joint Tukwila City Council and Planning Commission Meeting Tukwila International Boulevard Element of Comprehensive Plan Location: Tukwila Community Center, Room B Date: January 8, 2015 Start: 5:35 p.m. End: 8:20 p.m. PRESENT Elected Officials: Jim Haggerton, Mayor; Kate Kruller, Council President; Joe Duffie, Dennis Robertson, Allan Ekberg, Verna Seal, Kathy Hougardy, De'Sean Quinn Planning Commissioners: Louise Strander, Mike Hanson, Brooke Alford, Thomas McLeod, Sharon Mann, Miguel Maestas, Nhan Nguyen Staff: David Cline, Jack Pace, Moira Bradshaw, Derek Speck, Evie Boykan, Nora Gierloff, Robin Tischmak, Laurel Humphrey Consultants: Matt Roewe, Dan Bertolet and Katie Idziorek, VIA Architecture; Matt Hoffman, Heartland LLC; Maria Royer, Real Retail The purpose of this Council Work Session was to meet jointly with the Planning Commission to engage in visioning for the future of Tukwila International Boulevard. This is the first step in the process to update the TIB Element of the Comprehensive Plan. Council President Kruller and Mayor Haggerton welcomed the group. Councilmembers and Planning Commissioners introduced themselves and stated what they like best about the TIB neighborhood. Staff reviewed the agenda, rules of engagement, and the meeting goals, described as 1) Kick off the TIB Element of the Comp Plan and 2) Revisit, discuss and adjust the vision for the area. Following a staff overview of the accomplishments, changes, and planning history of the area, Councilmembers, Commissioners, staff and consultants broke up into three small groups to discuss the following questions: What is your long -term vision for the TIB neighborhood? What are the main barriers to achieving the desired positive change for TIB? What are your near -term hopes for TIB? The large group reconvened and a spokesperson for each group reported out. The VIA consultants shared observations and staff noted that the next step will be a second joint meeting with the Planning Commission in February or March to discuss realities and strategies.
