Karnak #97 Fibrated Aluminum Asphalt Roof Coat-

The Following Modified Bitumen Single -Ply Membrane
Systems.

Bitumi U.S., Inc. — Others Pending.
One coat of Kamak #97 Fibrated Aluminum Asphalt
Roof Coating will extend the life of Modified Bitumen
Membrane Roofs not only by limiting fire - spread (as in-
dicated by the U.L. Class "A" Rating), but its high
aluminum content and excellent reflectivity afford
solar protection and weather durability.
The special formula of Karnak #97 increases leafing
of aluminum flakes to the surface of the asphalt
coating, creating a more uniform and a tough metallic
surface.
One coat of Karnak #97 applied at one to two gallons
a square is all that's needed to enhance the life and
look of modified bitumen membrane roofing.

Dear Mr. Bianchi:
WED
O E ; i 8 3985
This is to advise you that we have completed our Investigation of
your Dibiten "4 Poly" modified bitumen roofing membrane over
combustible decks (Project 85NK20219).
T E S T R E C O R D
SAMPLES:
A representative of Underwriters Laboratories Inc. visited your
manufacturing facility, witnessed the manufacture, quality
control tests, and batching of your "4 Poly" membrane.
Our Casualty and Chemical Hazards Department conducted chemical
verification tests on the samples selected by our representative..__
Their•results are summarized on the attached sheet.
The test samples for the fire tests were constructed as follows:
System la -• 2 in. Thick of UL Classified fiberglass
insulation, followed by one layer of UL Classified Type G -2 base
sheet mechanically fastened to the deck. Followed by one layer
of "Dibiten 4 Poly" modified roofing membrane heat fused into
place, covered with "Dibicoat" roof coating applied at a rate of
1 -1/2 gal /100 fta.
System lb - Two layers of 15/16 in. UL Classified fiberglass
insulation with 6 in. offset joints covered with one layer of UL
Classified Type G -2 base sheet mechanically fastened into place
over the test deck constructed with 15/32 in. plywood. Followed
by one layer of "Dibiten 4 Poly" modified roofing membrane heat
fused into place, covered with " Dibicoat" roof coating applied at
a rate of 1 -1/2 gal /100 fta.

FIRE TESTS:
Class A fire tests were conducted on the above samples. These
tests were conducted in accordance with the Test Standard UL 790,
"Tests for Fire Resistance of Roof Covering Materials ",
(ASTM E -108, "Fire Tests of Roof Coverings ").
In the spread of flame and intermittent flame tests described in
this report, the temperature of the test flame, as measured by a
No. 14 gauge chromel- alumel wire thermocouple located as
described in UL Standard 790, was found to be 1400 ± 20 °F. The
physical appearance of the test flame when the test apparatus was
calibrated for flame temperature, was generally triangular in
shape, being about 3 ft wide at the deck's leading edge and
gradually narrowing to a width of approximately 6 in. at the top
of the 52 in. long calibration deck, with licks of flame
extending approximately another 1 ft.
The wind velocity required by UL 790 was determined by taking
readings on a smooth deck (40 in. wide and 52 in. long) midway up
the deck at the center and 3 in. from each vertical edge with a
vane type anemometer and timer. The velocity measured at an
incline of 5 in. /ft was found to be 1050 ± 50 ft /min
(12 ± 1/2 mi /h) with the carriage in position.
The results of these tests are summarized below:

Similar results were obtained in both tests. At no time during
these two tests was any smoke or asphalt visible at the

At no time during these two tests were any flying flaming brands
of roof covering material produced or did exposure of the roof
deck occur. Also, at no time during these tests were any sparks
or flames noted on the underside of the test deck. These results
comply with the Class A requirements.
A discoloration of the plywood resulted during each of these two
test.

For each of four test decks at an incline of 1/2 in. to the
horizontal foot, a well ignited Class A burning brand was
positioned over the "T" joint formed in the plywood deck.
At no time during these tests were any flying flaming brands of
roof covering material produced or did exposure of the roof deck
occur. Also, at no time during these tests were any sparks or
flames noted on the underside of the test deck. These results
comply with the Class A requirements.

CONCLUSION:
Based upon the above fire test results, Classification can be
established. The Follow -Up Service Inspection Procedure is being
revised to include "Dibiten 4 Poly" modified bitumen roofing
membrane.
The Classification Cards are being established to include the
following:
Sheathing material (modified bitumen) and roof insulation, for
use in construction of built -up roof coverings as specified below
(minimum specified) .

UL's testing of the above was for the purpose of leading to a
program of Classification and Follow -Up Service. Product
Classification involves much more than merely testing the product
in accordance with a designated Standard. It also involves
identification of and selection of materials to be tested at the
factory where produced. It involves the preparation of a
detailed inspection document if the product is found to conform.
It involves the implementation of an ongoing program of
unannounced inspections at the factory and countercheck tests to
verify on a continuing basis that the product, as produced, is
identical to the product tested. Finally, product Classification
involves the use of a Classification Mark on that part of a
manufacturer's production that is found to be in conformance.
The use, purchase, and distribution of such Marks are rigorously
controlled by the Laboratories.
The Classification Mark of Underwriters Laboratories Inc. on the
containers or wrappers is the only method provided by
Underwriters Laboratories to identify roof covering materials
which have been produced under our Follow -Up Service.
This letter concludes the investigation being conducted under
Project 85NK20219. We have advised our Accounting Department to
issue a final billing for this project.
Underwriters Laboratories Inc. authorizes the addressee to__,
reprod"uce this - Report `provided it is reproduced in its entirety. _
