HomeMy WebLinkAboutTLAB 2015-01-06 MinutesTukwila Library Advisory Board (TLAB) Committee Minutes January 6, 2015 — Tukwila Community Center Attendance: Sharon Kidd (Chair), Linda McLeod, Marie Parrish, Gerie Ventura (Secretary) Staff: Angie Benedetti (KCLS), Stephanie Gardner (Tukwila Parks & Recreation) Call to order: The meeting was called to order at 7:16pm. Business Items: Since it was her first meeting with us, we went out of agenda order and Angelina (Angie) Benedetti introduced herself briefly. She will be attending our meetings instead of John Sheller from now on. 2. KCLS Library Director search: Marie reported that the recent KCLS Library Director search group meeting was an interesting experience, with 15 or 16 Library Advisory Board members from around the system. The new director, chosen by the KCLS Board of Directors, starts January 26. His name is Gary Wasdin, the former Executive Director of the Omaha Public Library in Nebraska. 3. Angie reported on upcoming Teen Programs such as the King County "Count Us In" event on January 22 in which homeless teenagers will be asked to check -in with the library to be counted. Data on homeless youth will be used to understand the scope of the problem and inform regional efforts to prevent and end youth homelessness. Librarian Rachel McDonald is involved with this. There have been staffing changes at the Foster Library. Gaye has moved to the Burien Library. A new children's librarian will be hired. Barbara Santos - Johnson is now the Operations Manager at the Fairwood Library. The new Operations Manager at the Foster Library is Farouk Borah. Angie will be be at Foster at least one weekend a month. Programming: this year is all about the brain -- "Mind Matters" Building update: Architects Perkins & Will. The library and the city of Tukwila are working to secure the property purchase and sale agreement. After that is a bid process. There will be a 12 -14 month construction timeline, once construction has begun. Tukwila Library Public art: artist John Fleming will be asking for Tukwila Community input as the design of the public art is developed. It will be at the corner of South 1441' & Tukwila International Boulevard. 4. Stephanie reported that winter programming has just started. The national program "Silver Sneakers" is new this year. Stephanie handed out a tentative meeting schedule for 2015 and asked us to review it so that we can finalize TLAB meeting dates. Marie will be gone in April and May. She asked us to think about what activities we want to do this year, which programs /events do we want to support and /participate in? (Examples: Dr. Seuss night is February 26 or we can sponsor a `Brain Olympics" event). We need to think of ways of partnering with Parks staff and KCLS. Angie mentioned that the Renton KCLS staff used to meet with the Renton Parks & Recreation staff on a regular basis. 5. Stephanie reminded us that we have $5,000 from the city of Tukwila, starting on January 1 of each year. Adjournment: It was moved by Linda to adjourn the meeting and seconded by Steve and the meeting was adjourned at 8:06pm.
