COMMUNITY AFFAIRS AND PARKS COMMITTEE - Meeting Minutes
July 27, 2015 — 5:30 p.m. — Hazelnut Conference Room
PRESENT
Councilmembers: Kate Kruller, Acting Chair; Dennis Robertson, Allan Ekberg, (Absent: Verna Seal)

CALL TO ORDER: Acting Chair Kruller called the meeting to order at 5:30 p.m.

A. Update on 2015 Parks and Recreation Work Plan
Parks staff provided an update on Parks Department initiatives and accomplishments from Janury
through June 2015. The update included information regarding 6 key focus areas: implementation
of project plans, accessible programs, citizen awareness of nutrition and activity, maintenance,
business involvement, and high performance. INFORMATION ONLY.
B. National League of Cities Youth Delegate Program
Staff provided an update on the National League of Cities Youth Delegate Program. This program
provides high school students an opportunity to attend one of the NLC two major conferences, during
which they would attend the same workshops and activities as elected officials from across the
country. Efforts are currently underway to identify and fund at least two students to participate in the
November 2015 Congress of Cities in Nashville, Tennessee. Funding is proposed to be shared
between the Mayor's Office Sister Cities travel budget and the City Council travel budget. Funds for
the chaperone are available from the Parks Department travel budget. Council President Kruller
requested that additional detail regarding chaperone expenses be included in any future update.
Councilmember Ekberg suggested that students and chaperones meet multiple times prior to the trip,
and that while travelling they wear coordinated attire that represents Tukwila. Staff noted that Teens
for Tukwila discussed this at a July 22 meeting and additional details on this effort will be shared
when available. INFORMATION ONLY.
