HomeMy WebLinkAboutRes 1220 - Support South King County Regional Justice Center (RJC) ILA 1906 CITY OF TUKWILA WASHINGTON RESOLUTION NO. 1220 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF TUKWILA, WASHINGTON, SUPPORTING THE SITING AND CONSTRUCTION OF A SOUTH KING COUNTY REGIONAL JUSTICE CENTER. WHEREAS, the residents of south King County are in need of, and deserve accessible King County governmental services; and WHEREAS, Tukwila residents must currently access the Superior Court, Prosecutor, Public Defender, Jail, and ancillary support services in downtown Seattle; and WHEREAS, King County has demonstrated nationally one of the most progressive records in alternative sentencing and one of the lowest incarceration rates in the nation; and WHEREAS, King County regularly houses in excess of 2,000 prisoners in a 1,623 bed facility; and WHEREAS, King County jail space has not kept pace with the 94% increase in prisoner population over the past 12 years; and WHEREAS, the Federal Court is nearing the point of ordering restricted booking or mandatory release of prisoners; and WHEREAS, King County voters will have an opportunity to vote on a five -year Levy for the construction of the Regional Justice Center costing $166.2 million, approximately $46 a year for a $155,000 home; and WHEREAS, King County voters will have an opportunity to make a 'Public Policy Decision" on the direction we wish to take concerning the prosecution and sentencing of criminals in our community by supporting or rejecting this proposal; NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF TUKWILA, WASHINGTON, DOES HEREBY RESOLVE TO ENDORSE THE SOUTH KING COUNTY REGIONAL JUSTICE CENTER LEVY, AND URGES ITS CITIZENS TO DO SO AS WELL.
