HomeMy WebLinkAboutArts 2015-05-05 MinutesARTS COMMISSION iW� a <.S & u�, E C, A LXiH O N MINUTES May 5, 2015 5:00 p.m. Tukwila Community Center Call to Order: The meeting was called to order by Commission Chair, Steve Mullet at 5:05 pm Attendance: Commissioners — Cynthia Chesak, Steve Mullet, Brian Kennedy Trisha Gilmore Student Representative — Nandina Cengic, potential future representative Daniel Humke Staff — Stephanie Gardner - Brown, Parks and Recreation Guests: Tay & Val of #Dreams Unlimited Approval of Minutes: Minutes from the March 3, 2015 meeting were unanimously approved. Citizen Comment: There were no Citizen Comments Business Items: Other a. #Dreams Unlimited: Nate Robinson, Teen Program Specialist, introduced Tay & Val from #Dreams Unlimited. Tay and Val are award - winning filmmakers and inspirational storytellers from Singapore, they are dreamers who have cycled and traveled across the globe by implementing their project "I Believe That Dreams Can Come True." Tay and Val proposed bringing their program, #Dreams Unlimited to Tukwila. The program is a 90 minute interactive multimedia presentation that would be created with select Foster High School Students. Together they will share inspiration, hopes and dreams — via media films, photos, live- music, spoken word performances and traditional oral story- telling. The culmination of the student's work with Tay and Val will result in a free presentation at the Foster Performing Arts Center on June 17th. A similar program has been held through and within other cities in King County. Nate Robinson formerly requested $4,000 to support the program. Brian Kennedy motioned that that he Arts Commission support the DreamsUnlimited program in the amount of $4,000 utilizing Sustained Support funding the City receives from 4Culture. Cynthia Chesak seconded the motion, all were in favor and the motion carried. b. 19th Annual Tukwila Fine Arts Show: Stephanie Gardner reminded the Commission that the art show reception would be held on Friday, May 8th and the art Show would be held on Saturday May 9th. Commissioners provided times they could help with show and reception set up. c. Art Display Panels: Stephanie reported the new art display panels had arrived and she believes the panel will positively contribute to the show. Discussion regarding the former panels was discussed, including that the panels were donated to the Arts Commission about four years ago. Cynthia Chesak made a motion to offer the former panels to the Tukwila Historical Society to utilize as they wish or find another organization to donate to. Trisha Gilmore seconded the motion, all were in favor and the motion carried. a. Cynthia Chesak provided information about the final shows being performed this school year. The shows will be on May 201h and May 21St Adjournment: The meeting was adjourned at 6:00 pm.
