As far as the soffit vents, yes that will work. Per our discussion, it is our understanding that the (9) 6x9 soffit vents indicated in your email below are situated along the back (north side) of the building. That is sufficient. Also there should be at least two on each end (short ends at east and west sides) of the building (I believe that is what was existing). Michael P. Smith, P.E., S.E. IN. is required. (18 x 50 SQ. IN. = 900 SQ. IN.) Eave Blocking Holes It appears that the eave blocking holes are approximately 1 3/4" diameter. If that is true, then a total of 370 holes is required. It is our understanding that all the blocking was replaced at the exterior walls. Therefore, if there are 3 holes per block (assuming 24" wide blocking, although I think the blocking is only 16" wide), you would have approximately 480 perimeter holes. Therefore, that is acceptable. Soffit Venting There is a continuous strip vent along the front (south side) of the building. That is acceptable. There appear to be soffit vents that are approximately 6" by 10" wide, so 60 SQ. IN. per vent. Fron photographs, there appear to be two at the east and of the building and two at the west end. I recommend that at least 6 of these size vents should be included on the back (north side) of the building. mps Michael P. Smith, P.E., S.E. Principal Pacific Engineering Technologies, Inc. 1700 Westlake Avenue N., Suite 100 Seattle, Washington 98109 206.281.7500 206.281.4611 (f) michaelp(a)pacengtech.com From: Mike Smith Sent: Friday, June 01, 2012 3:11 PM To: 'Brian Montag' Subject: El Matador Brian: Attached is a memo with the venting calculations and a note regarding the baffles at the eaves. 2 If you know the sizes of the venting holes (round holes in the eave blocking, soffit vent holes and width of continuous vent in soffit, and the size of the roof jacks), you /your contractor can figure out the number of holes /jacks /etc. required. We do not have the sizes that were provided at El Matador. We can also perform that calculation to give you a number of required holes if you provide us with the size of the holes as follows: • Roof eave vent holes (based on the diameter) • Roof Soffit vent holes (we believe that continuous venting is provided along the south front side and rectagular vents are provided on the three other sides - you may need to add some additional vents around the other three sides of the building) • Roof jack vents (based on the size of the vents) Please contact me if you have any questions or require additional information. mps Michael P. Smith, P.E., S.E. It is understood that when R-49 insulation will be blown in to an attic to the proper thickness, this occurs in the middle of the building. At the eaves, the thicknes of the insulation will need to diminish and baffles will be required. See attached drawings. In our case, at the eaves, it is acceptable to install baffles around the blocking so that you can maintain a 1" minimum distance between the insulation and the blocking /sheathing for airflow. Then there is no need to install holes in the blocking. mps Michael P. Smith, P.E., S.E. Cc: 'Phineas Lea' Subject: RE: Belfore (14828 Military Rd S., Tukwilla) Brian: It is acceptable to install holes in the blocking that extends between trusses to allow for venting as indicated in the photographs. The blocking member is only picking up the roof overhang member that you wanted to keep in place so that you did not have to install new trim around the perimeter of the building. According to the emails below, it sounds like on one side this is an issue, while on the other side it is not. I am guessing the front (south side) with the overhang is not a problem, while the north side is the issue. The east and west sides may also have a similar issue which the shorter overhang. Please let me know if you have any additional questions. mps Michael P. Smith, P.E., S.E. Baffles are necessary to maintain airspace between the insulation and the roof sheathing when soffit or bird block venting is used (see Figure 4 -4). This pro- motes cross - ventilation of the attic, helping to remove unwanted moisture. It minimizes potential rot problems, and ice damming in winter. Baffles are made of weather resistant material, typically wax - impregnated cardboard. IN. is required. If you know the sizes of the venting holes (round holes in the eave blocking, soffit vent holes and width of continuous vent in soffit, and the size of the roof jacks), you /your contractor can figure out the number of holes /jacks /etc. required. We do not have the sizes that were provided at El Matador. We can also perform that calculation to give you a number of required holes if you .provide us with the size of the holes as follows: 1 • Roof eave vent holes (based on the diameter) •. Roof Soffit vent holes (we believe that continuous venting is provided along the south front side and rectagular vents are provided on the three other sides - you may need to add some additional vents around the other three sides of the building) • Roof jack vents (based on the size of the vents) Please contact me if you have any questions or require additional information. mps Michael P.
