The subject report provides an overview of the display design. Since the winglet will be located in a weather environment, a loads and stress analysis was carried out to establish the structural integrity of the installation. The critical case in a situation with 100 mph winds was analyzed and the stresses evaluated for all critical components of the structure. Even for the highly unlikely event selected, the structural margins were found to be at least 4 to 5 times relative to ultimate material stresses. Thus, the installation is judged to be satisfactory from a structural safety standpoint under the most extreme and unlikely conditions. 1 Structural Analysis of 747 Blended Winglet Display Introduction The Museum of Flight, Seattle, WA, has determined that it would be desirable to create a major display that would highlight a unique aeronautical development that represents a significant technical achievement by a Seattle based company. Also this development has had substantial commercial success throughout the world. Toward this end they have chosen to display the prototype of the 747 Blended Winglet at the entrance to the Museum. The following report presents the features of the display and also provides the results of a structural analysis which validates the integrity of the structure and certain characteristics that will avoid possible safety issues in the future. System Configuration and Analysis The attached sketches (Figs. 1, 2 and 3) show the 747 Blended Winglet prototype installed on the mounting arrangement designed for display at the Museum of Flight. The following is a structural analysis of the winglet display and support elements for the above arrangement. The actual hardware as constructed corresponds in all essential respects to the above illustrations. The approach will be to determine the loads that can be expected to be applied to the winglet and supporting structure. The general equations are first developed to provide a basis for selecting critical loading conditions. Following determination of the critical design point(s), numerical analysis and calculations will establish the actual loads. Based on these loads, a stress analysis of critical parts of the structure will determine the suitability of the structure for its intended use. The analysis will be limited to static 2 loads cases only. Dynamic cases will not be included since it is anticipated that the support structure will be very rigid which would preclude significant dynamic interactions with wind induced forces. It will be apparent from results of the static analysis and low stress levels that the structural stiffness is very high which validates the above assumption. As for the winglet structure itself, there is no need to consider . a structural analysis because the original design analysis, augmented by flight test data has shown the winglet to be capable of supporting loads (including dynamic loads) far in excess of those that would be imposed by 100 mph winds, i.e., the critical design condition. The following discussion relates to the loads which are assumed to be applied to the winglet and its supporting structure. The loads equations are first derived based on the assumption that the loading conditions correspond to a wind speed of 100 mph. and that the wind is directed so as to produce the angle of attack corresponding to maximum lift. Figure 4 shows the winglet in relation to the basic right hand xyz coordinate system. Also included is the derivation of the forces and moments equations corresponding to applied air loads P, (Normal), V (Vertical) and D(Drag). Figure 5 shows the scheme for resolution of the forces and moments at the winglet mounting tower located at the head of the stand. These are further resolved into their appropriate components; F F F and moments M, P, Q shown at a representative station on the support strand. This relationship is shown in true dimension by the oblique view. On the following Page 10, the final equations 3 the above relationships in terms of forces F F B , F and moments MA, M M are presented. For various reasons, it is desirable to keep the aerodynamic effects separate from the weight effects. Therefore forces and moments equations related to winglet weight are given independently in the text below. The forms exactly parallel those previously used for air loads although some terms are missing because only a single component of force (i.e., weight) is involved. In the numerical analysis which follows the load components will be combined to determine overall loads and stresses for the critical design case. 4 n •1 It1cLJV7-7 N(, x 29 - SASE cev c. This will be achieved at an angle of attack that produces maximum lift, CL. in the positive sense. Although there is a similar loading case involving negative angle of attack, the corresponding value of the c will not exceed about 80% of the positive value. Since the major loads produced will be smaller and have the opposite sense, relative to the positive angle of attack case, the negative case is not critical. The following shows the results of detailed calculations for the critical design point case. Based on the above criteria, an analysis of winglet loads is carried out and documented herein for the following conditions: Wind Speed = 100 mph (q = 25.6 PSF) Wind Direction (i.e. AOA) to give maximum load Steady atmospheric conditions Assume C = 1.2 (Section value) Assume a load distribution that is elliptic at the free end on each of the vertical and horizontal segments of the winglet. Based on the above assumptions and the relationships given in Fig. 4, we determine the following relevant geometric parameters. Wherever there may be some ambiguity in the values calculated, the results are interpreted conservatively, which means that the values giving the largest loads are used. 12 Having established the general relationships for structural loads, we now proceed to evaluate loads and corresponding stresses for critical conditions which define the design point. Calculation of Forces and Moments Aerodynamic Loads The aerodynamic forces and moments are readily established based on the assumptions previously given for the critical design point. However, it is further assumed that the loads are located at their respective centers of pressure so there is no pitching moment to consider. However, the drag is estimated to consist primarily of induced drag with a very small component due to skin friction. The associated pressure drag is also quite small since the maximum C occurs at an angle of attack corresponding to minimal flow separation. Therefore, the drag is estimated using the induced drag formula: L Drag — s ,r qb where L = lift = P + V sin 0 = 2,227 lb. and b = effective span = 15 ft. 13 S, = 2 (9.5 + 3.0) (966) 93.8 ft 2 S„ = 2 (9.4 +13.5)(3.45) = 38.8 ft z = .40 (14.5) = 5.8 ft Yi = R tan ( 90 2 0 l - 4.5 (.76) = 3.45 ft x, = 1.91 ft (scaled from drawing) Y = 14.5 (.268) + 3.45 = 7.34 ft x = 8.61 ft (scaled from drawing) Note that R = transition radius and 0 = cant angle. Appropriate calculations for forces and moments follow: .67 c q S,, = .67 (1.2)(25.6)(93.8) = 1931 lb. .95 C qS = .95(1.2)(25.6)(38.8) = 1142 lb. The loads calculations are separated into two types; i.e. those due to air load as shown previously and those increments due to weight as given below (Pg. 17). This separation is made for convenience since the air loads might vary according to any number of conditions while the weight effects are constant. It will also be apparent that the weight effects are generally small relative to the air loads. Using the relationships obtained above, we now evaluate the forces and moments for the stations illustrated in the layout of Figure 6. The calculation sheet, Table I displays the results for forces and moments at selected locations. These will be used to evaluate stresses throughout the stand structure and its foundation base. 14 Aerodynamic Loads F, = D L' — ( P , + l c sin 90' 4 x106 = 274 ;TO,' n (25.6 (15) n(25.6) (225 F = P,cosO = 1931 (966) = 18651b. These are essentially delineated as follows: 1. Mounting Tower (mounted at the top of the support stand) 2. Attachment Bolls (Winglet to tower) 3. Support Stand 4. Support Base & Bolts (Support stand attachment to assembly mounting base) The following sketch provides critical dimensions for the mounting tower and the winglet attachment bolt pattern. OBLIQUE Veil 3s 4.0 TOWE1 CeAo - RO /D Tor° View 66, 19 Tower Analysis Based on the tower configuration shown in Figure 7, the following loads, and stresses structural characteristics have been determined. Total Loads M = - 16,456 + 2,457 = - 13,999 ft. lb. M = - 4,896 + 2,977 = -1,919 ft. lb. M, = 18,069 + 0 = 18,069 ft. lb. Total interface moment is: Neutral Axis and Moment of Inertia 13 (a) Q + = But, a = Ka and a„ = - Kb which, substitud above gives So, MIN = 13 -53 Kb =0 5.3 _ • a 64 13 I= a = (131 2 +b 2 I ``(( ll = (2.34) 2 1 +(3.66 2J = 71.2 2 (13.0 +5.3) = 8818 psi 1 /M x 2 + M = 103,999) + (1,919) = 14,120 ft. lb. so we have a = 2.34 and b = 3.66 Bending Stresses a _ M, y - 14,120 (12)(3.66). 8,710 psi 71.2 p a = - .64 (8,710)= - 5,574 psi a and, sin ce — a L = b we get : Tension Stress F, = 1,642 - 650 = 992 lb. ar = 992 = 108.4 psi which when added to the positive bending stress gives : 20 Support Stand Analysis The following analysis applies to the support stand itself and its base attachment. The distribution of forces and moments and the critical geometric characteristics are shown in TABLE I. The latter are determined from the stand layout shown in Figure 6. Based on the equations previously developed and the appropriate dimensional data, TABLE I also gives numerical values separately for the aerodynamic loads and loads due to winglet weight. Inspection will show that the latter are quite small in comparison to the aerodynamic loads. Since the minimum section is at the top of the stand, i.e., STA 1, we focus on this location as being critical. Thus, even though the loads increase somewhat from upper point to lower point, the section moment of inertia increases rapidly so that the bending stresses are maximum at STA 1. Therefore, only the • stresses at STA 1 are evaluated. Also overall stiffness of the stand is greatly enhanced by the large buildup of section inertias toward the base. Therefore, no attempt to analyze dynamic loads will be made. For the square section at STA 1, the analysis on Page 22 shows that the bending stresses are quite low. 21 Stand Analysis 1 = = Irr Square Section (Typical) i l = th z z 2g ht 2 I 6 + 2 = 3th The most critical section is at STA 1 since it has the maximum value of moment / section modulus. So, analyzing STA 1, we get: v _ M, y _ 10,630 (12) (4) = ± psi si "'' l 128.6 Note = 1 = 3 ( 8 = 128 in" 17,302 (12) = 4,326 psi 2th 2(3)82 P g Q , y _ 10,393 (12 (4 o- _ = ± 3,879 psi Imo, 128 The maximum combined axial stress is: v,, = 3,968 + 3,879 = 7,847 The maximum stresses on the critical plane are: l Z = Z lo Az + 1", 2 + ( 1 0:7 I = 9,749 psi T = T + Z c = 5,833 psi 22 These stress values are substantially below the allowables for structural steel where Base of Stand C ULT = 60,000 psi r = 25,000 psi ALLO Thus the structure has acceptable margins above the stresses corresponding to the applied loading. As previously stated, the stress levels at the interface between the stand and its base (STA 7) are extremely small due to the large base cross section. Thus the stress occurring in the interface welds would be considered to be small even if the weld stress factor is 2 to 3 times the calculated value which is highly unlikely. S -74N0 BASE ($rgrion 7) 23 Assembly Mounting Base It is proposed that the entire assembly i.e., winglet plus stand will be mounted on a reinforced concrete pedestal having the dimensions and specifications as shown in Figure 8 below. The reinforcing steel configuration corresponds to standard practice for applications of this type and will be fabricated separately prior to being placed in the concrete forms. Following secure placement, high strength concrete will be poured in place. Attachment Bolt Stresses 8 - Bolt Pattern / Base Stand The maximum tension stress at STA 7 is due to the combination of moments M, and Q and vertical force, F,. Typical analysis of a multiple bolt down base gives: hn J 2 F hp As h A hi A BOLT Circular Mounting Base = 4 (.9) .64 in where subscript 1 refers to the critical bolt. Substitution of the appropriate values for h „. provides the following results: o = 7,119 psi 18,448 (12) z = [4 (1.5) (10) (1.4)1785 - 3.357 psi Conclusions: Shear stress is negligible (i.e., about 13% of allowable shear stress). Maximum tension stress is less than 12% of c yan for machinery steel. The base arrangement is quite satisfactory due to very low stress distribution in the base and attachment bolts. 24 ) d 4Pr Zz -/e2. diR(UL yrSA✓D vac 72 /1-1o4241si;✓, & - -SL es,c A /n =42eCD Coit/Ci TE Lt/6 r $gt; IA) ro 1$1r 3 rnr - Airy 4,2E 25 Conclusions The following summarizes the results of the foregoing loads and stress analysis and provides conclusions and recommendations. 1. The overall results show that the proposed mounting and support system for the 747 winglet installation at the Museum of Flight is satisfactory from a structural standpoint and has significant margins beyond loads imposed by highly conservative weather and severe wind conditions. 2. The loads are based on a wind speed (100 mph) and direction combination that is highly unlikely to occur particularly in the proximity of the location at the Museum of Flight selected for the installation. 3. The support system is very rigid which severely limits the possible development of dynamic loads as a significant factor in the design. Therefore, no analysis of such conditions was undertaken. 4. All the critical elements of the system have been analyzed and shown to have structural characteristics which preclude the possibility of structural failure even under an assumed loading condition which is considered highly unlikely to occur within the lifetime of the installation. 26 04 -05 -2007 SCOTT MCCONNELL 9404 EAST MARGINAL WY S TUKWILA WA 98108 RE: Permit No. D06 -398 9404 EAST MARGINAL WY S TUKW Dear Permit Holder: In reviewing our current records the above noted permit has not received a final inspection by the City of Tukwila Building Division.
