Please let me know if you have any questions or need additional information about any of the following items. I. Intergovernmental Update • APA Ambassadors Program at Foster High School: Community Development Planning staff connected social studies teachers at Foster High School with the American Planning Association (APA) Ambassador Program. The program works with K -12 students to increase students' understanding of the planning profession, issues that planners face, and to promote the benefits of good community planning. The ambassador team will work with Foster teachers to develop an interactive workshop for students to research and design solutions for a local planning issue. • Kin. County ounty City Managers/City Administrators Meeting: City Administrator David Cline attended the monthly meeting of the King County City Managers and City Administrators on January 6 at Bothell City Hall. At the meeting PSE provided an overview about their Energize Eastside Project, both AWC and Sound Cities provided updates, and a tour was provided of the new Bothell City Hall, which is financed through a 63 -20 arrangement. • Puget Sound Regional Council: Mayor Ekberg and Community Development Director Jack Pace attended the Puget Sound Regional Council Growth Management Policy Board meeting on January 7. • South Sound Chambers of Commerce Legislative Coalition's Legislative Breakfast: Mayor Ekberg, Council President Duffie, Councilmember Kruller, City Administrator David Cline and Government Relations and Communications Manager Rachel Bianchi attended the South Sound Chambers of Commerce Legislative Coalition's Legislative breakfast on January 8. A key part of the gathering was to celebrate the success of last year's Transportation package and the funding of the Pacific Gateway Projects — SR 167 and SR 5og. • Joint Press Conference: On January 8 Mayor Ekberg, City Administrator David Cline and Government Relations and Communications Manager Rachel Bianchi attended a joint press conference in Tukwila with leaders from the Washington State Senate, City of Auburn and City Tukwila City Hall • 6200 Southcenter Boulevard • Tukwila, WA 98188 • 206 - 433 -1800 • Website: Tukwila WA.gov 7 City Administrator's Report January 13, 2o16 Page 2 of Seattle in support of State legislation creating a property tax exemption to preserve and rehabilitate affordable housing. Boeing Access Road Light Rail and Commuter Rail Stations (ST3): On Wednesday, January 13 Mayor Ekberg, Councilmember Quinn, City Administrator David Cline, and Rachel Bianchi participated in a planning meeting regarding the stations at Boeing Access Road that are on the draft list for the ST3 ballot measure. The coalition that is made up of employers, employees, residents and organizations continues to advocate for these projects. It is expected that Sound Transit will have a draft final project list in March. The coalition will have significant conversations with the various members of the Sound Transit board over the next six weeks to support these stations inclusion in the final ballot measure that will go before the voters in November of 2o16. Community Events • 2nd Annual Holiday Lights Contest: In December the City sponsored the 2nd Annual Holiday Lights Contest. Seven winners from neighborhoods around the city were awarded yard signs for such categories as "Visible from Space" and "Northwest Flair." Two businesses were honored for best indoor and outdoor display. • New Year's Golf Tournament: Foster Golf Links hosted a sold out golf tournament on New Year's Day. The event is a Cross Country format, where the course is not played by its traditional routing. The golf shop and maintenance crew worked together to re -route the golf course for one day only. This really fun event brought in over $15oo of revenue and was extremely well received. • Bilingual Boot Camp: January 2 marked the first day of the new Bilingual Saturday Morning Boot Camp Class. This class is collaboration between Global 2 Local, Cesar Amaral of MX 18o and Tukwila Parks and Recreation. III. Staff Updates Public Safety • Community Outreach Training: Sergeant Boyd began a series of presentations to each of the patrol squads and police department leadership on community outreach including ideas to build trust with the community and the "Do's and Don'ts" of community policing. • New School Resource Officer: Officer Adam Balcom has been selected to represent the police department as the next School Resource Officer. Officer Balcom has already established partnerships with the school and has had positive interactions with the students. Project Updates • Crystal Springs Park Trails: Parks Maintenance implemented CEPTED (Crime Prevention through Environmental Design) principles pruning around the trails and upper area of Crystal Springs Park to open up the visual sight lines and make the park feel safer. • Foster Library: The King County Library System (KCLS) is on schedule to open the new library in Tukwila Village in late 2o16. City staff will seek Council direction on the City's interest in the property in the next few months. Vacant Motel Properties: A pre- construction meeting was held with City staff and the contractor and various project managers to review demolition plans for the Great Bear, Boulevard, Spruce, Traveler's Choice motels, and Sam's Smoke Shop. The removal of hazardous materials and mobilization of equipment will begin at the end of January. IV. Responses to Council /Citizen Inquiries Date of Inquiry Inquiry Response Councilmember Seal City staff is in the process of investigating January 4, 2oi6 expressed concerns about this issue and will provide an update to bright lights around Riverside Council in the near future.
