Book Drive
Joyce explained that thanks to a referral from Jenny McCoy, the Seattle Union Gospel Mission donated
about 8 cases of new and lightly used books to the May book drive for Tukwila elementary students. A
thank you letter will be sent to the Mission on behalf of the Commission. She also indicated that the
same group has volunteered to donate 400 meals per day, five days per week, from June to August, to
help provide lunches to school age children who are not already included in other summer programs.
The book collection bins are now all placed at various locations. Joyce will be working with Municipal
Court staff to have volunteers place Equity /Diversity "stickers" inside the books.

Joan and Melissa provided input from the Barnes and Noble book fair that took place on Saturday, May
9, 2015. Unfortunately, there were not a lot of shoppers during our time there, and there were fairly
strict "guidelines" regarding what could be shared with shoppers regarding the fund raising event for
the book drive. Joyce will follow up with Barnes and Noble to determine how much (if any) money was
raised for the purchase of additional books.
It was suggested that we put a copy of the flyer on Tuknet, to make employees aware of the book drive.
Teen Kick -Off Event
The Teen Kick -Off Event is June 17th at Foster High School. Equity and Diversity will have a booth at the
event, and give out wrist bands and share information regarding scholarships and other City materials.
Snack Pack Program
Jenny McCoy provided an update on the Snack Pack Program. On May 24, the new "pantry" will be
dedicated. This is located at the South Community Baptist Church and will provide a storage area for
food and other supplies utilized as part of the program. The dedication will be at 11:00 a.m. There will
also be 2 food drives in the next couple of weeks one at TCC and the second at Sam's Club, for the Snack
Pack Program.
She also shared that the Homelessness 101 panel discussion w2ill be held on May 201h at the School
District Administration building, 7:00 -8:30 p.m.
Other
Joyce shared information about upcoming regional events. She also advised Commissioners that the
previously approved grant funding for interpreters for the District would apparently not be fully utilized.
The grant was approved for $550, but other sources have been located. Our grant amount will be
reduced to about $75.00.
