HomeMy WebLinkAboutEquityDiversity 2015-10-01 MinutesEQUITY AND DIVERSITY MEETING MINUTES October 1, 2015 Present: Joan Hernandez, Aaron Draganov, Nate Robinson, Kathy Hougardy, Crystal Sweet, Melissa Hart Absent: Thong Ung Staff: Joyce Trantina Meeting was called to order at 5:15 p.m. OLD BUSINESS Minutes from the September 3, 2015 Meeting were reviewed and approved as written. Motion to approve as written by Melissa Hart, seconded by Kathy Hougardy. UNANIMOUS APPROVAL Commission Vacancies Discussion followed regarding vacancies on the Commission. Aaron is checking with people at the School District to see if there is interest (there are 2 School District position openings). It was suggested that people who have an interest in serving on the Commission attend the November and /or December meeting. Melissa Hart shared that she will be moving to SeaTac late this year, which could create another vacancy on the Commission. Aaron reported that Dr. Judith Barry has replaced Martin Turney, Finance Director. Student Comments at Council Meetin The Commissioners discussed testimony that was given by two Pacific Islander Foster students, sharing their concerns about the lack of diversity within the school district faculty /staff. The teachers spoke highly about a Pacific Islander teacher who did not return to school this fall. Commissioners discussed the importance of role models for all children, and wondered how the Commission could lend its support to the District. The Career Fair is very important in helping our kids understand the various types of jobs and careers that they may not be aware of. They also discussed the challenges of being a teacher in a very diverse community like Tukwila, and the fact that many students don't consider pursuing a career in teaching. Equity and Diversity October 1, 2015 Page 2 The Commission's 4t" quarter goal for 2015 is to invite speakers from our culturally diverse communities to share their stories at meetings, in an effort to help build understanding and relationships. The group felt it might be worthwhile to ask some of the school district staff to attend a future meeting, to ask how the E/D might be able to further help /support our students. Nate volunteered to draft an email "invitation" and solicit feedback from the other Commissioners. Folks at the District could include: Dr. Coogan, Dr. Billingsly, and others. Community Safety Event Joyce shared info. regarding the upcoming Community Safety Conversation, scheduled for Tuesday, October 20 at Showalter. Safety information will be provided by reps. from Police and Fire departments, with information booths, a light meal and a brief table exercise. Volunteers to help in various activities are needed.
