UNANIMOUS APPROVAL
Commission Vacancies
Discussion followed regarding vacancies on the Commission. Aaron is checking with people at the
School District to see if there is interest (there are 2 School District position openings). It was suggested
that people who have an interest in serving on the Commission attend the November and /or December
meeting. Melissa Hart shared that she will be moving to SeaTac late this year, which could create
another vacancy on the Commission.
Aaron reported that Dr. Judith Barry has replaced Martin Turney, Finance Director.
Student Comments at Council Meetin
The Commissioners discussed testimony that was given by two Pacific Islander Foster students, sharing
their concerns about the lack of diversity within the school district faculty /staff. The teachers spoke
highly about a Pacific Islander teacher who did not return to school this fall. Commissioners discussed
the importance of role models for all children, and wondered how the Commission could lend its
support to the District. The Career Fair is very important in helping our kids understand the various
types of jobs and careers that they may not be aware of. They also discussed the challenges of being a
teacher in a very diverse community like Tukwila, and the fact that many students don't consider
pursuing a career in teaching.

The Commission's 4t" quarter goal for 2015 is to invite speakers from our culturally diverse communities
to share their stories at meetings, in an effort to help build understanding and relationships. The group
felt it might be worthwhile to ask some of the school district staff to attend a future meeting, to ask how
the E/D might be able to further help /support our students. Nate volunteered to draft an email
"invitation" and solicit feedback from the other Commissioners. Folks at the District could include: Dr.
Coogan, Dr. Billingsly, and others.
Community Safety Event
Joyce shared info. regarding the upcoming Community Safety Conversation, scheduled for Tuesday,
October 20 at Showalter. Safety information will be provided by reps. from Police and Fire departments,
with information booths, a light meal and a brief table exercise. Volunteers to help in various activities
are needed.
