HomeMy WebLinkAboutCOPCAB 2016-02-11 MinutesCity of Tukwfla Allan Ekberg, Mayor Police Department - Mike Villa, Chief February 11, 2016 6:30pm- 8:OOpm Present: Commander McOmber, Chris Partman, Jerry Thornton, Robert Neuffer, Christine Neuffer, Laurie Clark, Luis Gallegos • Minutes for 1/14/15 meeting tabled due to lack of quorum • Chief's update, by Commander McOmber • Staffing, one officer short of full staffing • Doing a background investigation on a new front office person • Sgt. Boyd doing a lot of community outreach • Posted the two positions for the grant - funded Community Outreach officer and filled one of the two • Sgt. Johnson was promoted to Commander in anticipation of retirement • Person arrested and charged for shooting at Orchard last month • Updated the evidence tracking software to be more mobile and flexible • TAC team detectives assisted a MT. detective in finding a sexually exploited 17 yr. old runaway • Det. Cruz is Officer of the Year • Question — Hearing on the news that about "officer ratios ". How is this determined in Tukwila? Usually it is on population, however, Tukwila has only 19,000 residents and over 150,000 visitors daily. • Discussion about response time to calls and reaction of officers. • COPCAB Awards • Trina Cook nominated • Would like to have a decision by March meeting • Good of the Order Luis — introduced himself. Used to dislike school, but is now an honor student. Played football, but did not like the roughness and quit after one game. Hopes to play soccer this year. He lives here in Tukwila and is a sophomore this year. Luis also knows and is trusted by many other students. Robert Neuffer — They talk to a lot of neighbors and he is concerned with the lack of participation. He is also concerned with online reporting and the loss of an opportunity for a positive point of contact. He feels like this is a barrier to people who are not as determined as he is. Christine Neuffer — Has heard that the dept. was understaffed for a long time. Asked about if citizens could take reports. Answer: has to be a commissioned officer. Had called about a car riffled through and things stolen. No officer came out, just a phone call. The next night two other neighbors were hit. Wonders if there is a way to let the neighbors know. Nextdoor does not have a great reach. Some folks may want to stay anonymous when giving ideas and /or input. Discussion of body cameras, expenses and privacy. Tukwila is waiting to see what happens in the Legislature before putting together a plan for body cameras. Meeting adjourned at 8 pm Next meeting will be on Thursday, 3/10/16 from 6:30pm- 8:00pm.
