HomeMy WebLinkAboutFS 2016-04-19 Item 2B - Handout Distributed at Meeting - Speed Reduction in Neighborhoods of Tukwila (SPRINT)SPeed Reduction In Neighborhoods of Tukwila (SPRINT) OVE EW SPRINT OVERVIEW Traffic issues and speeding vehicles in the residential neighborhoods are top concerns of many of the Tukwila residents. We are currently working on ways to address these concerns while simultaneously supporting the cities mission, strategic plan, and 2015 — 2016 city priorities. SPRINT OVERVIEW Strategies to reduce speeding in residential neighborhoods Collaboration between the Mayor's office, public works, and the Police Department focused on mitigating the issue and associated impacts. Education Public Information Campaign delivering a consistent public message indicating a very low tolerance for speeding in the city of Tukwila, specifically in residential areas. Engineering • Specific data collection in residential areas to determine which traffic calming techniques can be used to mitigate the problem. Enforcement • The Police Department will target identified problem areas using a High Visibility Enforcement Campaign to reduce speeding, which will be publicized in advance of the speed reduction initiative going into effect EDUCATION THROUGH PUBLIC OUTREACH Brandon Miles (Mayor's Office) Traffic Engineering (Public Works) Engineering Research and data collection on specific locations must be gathered to determine engineering options, which involves: City Engineers/Traffic Engineer location and evaluation of problem areas • Purchase and use of RADAR for speed measurement • Purchase and use of portable speed alert/monitoring equipment • Traffic calming measures Traffic Enforcement (Police Department) High Visibility Enforcement Supported by the city's education and engineering strategies Traffic Unit- Sergeant and 2 Traffic Officers Re-classify two existing patrol officers as traffic enforcement officers (additional duty): Part of allocated patrol staffing Furnished with the equipment to conduct HVE (Bike, LIDAR, RADAR) 30-50% of their time will be focused on HVE Focused on problem areas/streets in the neighborhoods More traffic enforcement in our neighborhoods throughout the week FINANCIAL IMPACT 2016- $12,000 Electronic speed data collection equipment (Public Works Budget 9,000 Salaries 2017- $122,000 Motorcycles and associated traffic enforcement equipment. To be supported by revenue from traffic infractions.
