Mayor Ekberg welcomed board members, introduced himself and shared his background. He thanked board
for their dedication and service to the city. Advisory board members introduced themselves and their
connection with human services and the City of Tukwila.
The Board agreed to set aside $10,000 from our 2017 -18 budget for a pilot project supporting grassroots
programs that will commence later this fall. The purpose of the pilot is to ensure equitable access to funding
for underserved /underrepresented populations.
Board members discussed the social voice of change that is occurring within the community and all of the
positive changes that have occurred in the last few years. They also discussed current demographics and
increasing poverty levels and the need for more housing options, especially affordable, to help residents
stabilize and reduce movement out of Tukwila due to increasing housing costs. How can we engage with
and incentivize developers to be creative with types of housing (i.e. homestead land trust, etc.)
Six international visitors will come to Tukwila to talk with city and school district staff to learn about resources
for refugee and immigrant community members. Meeting will be held April 19, 2016 in the Tukwila District
office from 9:30a -11 a.
On May 11, 2016 Bank on Seattle — Financial Empowerment will be speaking to cities and local banks. Time
and location to be determined.
Tukwila Pantry has a new interim director. There has been great support from the community. The Pantry
board is in need of active, engaged board members.
