Park Naming — Round 2
ISSUE
Compiled list of suggested names for the Duwamish Garden /Chinook Wind Project site.
BACKGROUND
This was discussed at last month's Park Commission meeting and agreed to postpone the voting until
the new commissioners are appointed on April 18, 2016. A recommendation needs to be made at this
month's meeting.
DISCUSSION
The list below is the revised list of names that was agreed upon at the April Park Commission meeting.
A recommendation needs to be made at this meeting due to project timing. Regarding the physical
limitations of the engraved name fitting on the rock, or number of characters, Public Works staff
confirmed that the original design accounted for the following, "15 letters that are 8" high, then "City
of Tukwila" below, which has 3" high letters. The 8" high text is designed to be seen by motorists. This
could be modified somewhat, and we will have a shop drawing and mock -up to show how it all fits. So, 1
would say our limit should be about 15 -20 letters for the main park name." Here are the 22 suggestions
grouped according to similar names:
o Carosino Park
o Carosino's Duwamish Gardens
o Carrossino Duwamish Gardens
• Ray /Carrossino Pioneer Park
• Ray Carrossino Pioneer Park
o Ray Carrossino Nature Center
o Salmon Cove Park
o Chinook Cove Park
o Chinook Wind
o Chinook Wind Park
o Chinook Wind Restoration Park

FINANCIAL IMPACT
If the Parks Commission were to recommend interpretive signage (to demonstrate the historical
significance and previous uses of the site) in addition to the main park name sign, then an estimated
cost for each 24" x 36" size high quality sign would be approximately $500.
RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommend the project site, unofficially referred to as Duwamish Gardens and Chinook Wind that
is located between East Marginal Way and Tukwila International Boulevard, be named "Chinook Wind
Natural Area" and that interpretive signage be placed within the project site to capture and honor the
history of both sites.
