HomeMy WebLinkAboutEquityDiversity 2015-09-03 MinutesEQUITY AND DIVERSITY MEETING MINUTES September 3, 2015 Present: Joan Hernandez, Nate Robinson, Kathy Hougardy, Melissa Hart, Aaron Draganov, Crystal Sweet Absent: Thong Ung Guests: Moira Bradshaw, Chris Flores Staff: Joyce Trantina (absent) Meeting was called to order at 5:15 p.m. PRESENTATIONS Acting Fire Chief Flores and Moira Bradshaw gave a presentation on the Regional Fire Authority Annexation Investigation and the work of the 2015 Regional Fire Authority Steering Committee. Handouts were provided, questions asked and answered. Commission members encouraged future public presentations include written information translated into Spanish, Somali, Burmese and Napali. MINUTES August minutes were approved as submitted. OLD BUSINESS At the August 3, 2015 Regular Council Meeting, Council members approved the reappointment of Commission members Kathy Hougardy, Joan Hernandez, Aaron Draganov, and Nate Robinson, through 2017. Aaron volunteered to explore potential candidates to fill the additional two school representative positions. Commissioners who attended the Teen Kick Off event and the Kids Fest reported on the good attendance and success of both events. Parks and Recreation staff distributed the E/D bracelets we donated to the students, who liked the color scheme we chose. It was recommended that we have booths at both of these events next year. Equity and Diversity Minutes September 3, 2015 Page 2 NEW BUSINESS A community conversation with Fire and Police, facilitated by our Community Connectors, will be held in mid October (moved from mid September). A location is still being determined. This will be an open public forum, targeted to reach members of our diverse communities and share information regarding safety. There will be a need for volunteers to act as greeters, scribes, etc. and this would be an excellent opportunity to connect with many of our residents. More information will be available soon. ANNOUNCEMENTS Humanities of Washington speakers bureau presents "Defeating Racism Today' a conversation about institutionalized racism by actress and storyteller Eva Abram, sponsored by the Tukwila Historical Society on Saturday, September 26 at 1:00 p.m. at the Heritage & Cultural Center, 24475 591h Ave. S. Nate Robinson, as a 4 Culture Board Member, is working with 4 Culture to bring a Creative Justice Program to Tukwila that uses arts to connect with youth. SAVE THE DATE: December 17, 2015 for another Heritage Festival sponsored by Parks & Recreation. Meeting adjourned at 6:00 p.m. NEXT MEETING - OCTOBER 1, 2015
