City of Tukwila
Allan Ekberg, Mayor
INFORMATIONAL MEMORANDUM
Community Affairs and Parks Committee
FROM: Rick Still, Parks and Recreation Director
BY: Stephanie Gardner, Parks and Recreation Analyst
CC: Mayor Ekberg
DATE: June 7, 2016
SUBJECT: Healthy Tukwila
ISSUE
The Parks and Recreation Department is developing a platform to further promote healthy lifestyles
and seeks input from CAP members.
BACKGROUND
Tukwila Parks and Recreation has actively monitored the general health of the City (and region) for
several years. In 2013 the City committed to the "I" CANN initiative, ( "I" Community Action Nutrition
Network), a multi- organization collaborative aimed at reducing the prevalence of obesity in kids and
families throughout King County. Parks and Recreation focus on developing opportunities that will
improve the quality of life for those who reside, work, or visit Tukwila. In 2015 staff applied for and
received a Seattle -King County Department of Public Health grant (Partnerships to Improve
Community Health) which has been used to develop and implement strategies that bring awareness
to chronic diseases that result from obesity. This grant and its associated work kicked off "Healthy
Tukwila."
Staff have met with Councilmembers, community leaders and others who have shared their interest
in promoting health and wellness opportunities that will improve the quality of life for residents,
employees (those that work for the City and throughout Tukwila) and visitors.
DISCUSSION
Staff reviewed several health and wellness initiatives and programs that have been implemented in
cities throughout the United States. Initiatives such as the Let's Move Campaign, 5210 Campaign
and activity portals and programs such as FitCity San Anotonio and the Mayor's Fitness Council of
Austin, TX are just a few staff evaluated. There are several aspects to health that go beyond
wellness activities and each initiative that was reviewed had several commonalities and differences.
Staff would like to share and discuss four areas of focus with CAP members:
Fit City: health, wellness, physical fitness
Green City: environmental stewardship, parks/ trails, built environments
Connected City: social equity, volunteerism, community engagement
Vibrant City: business engagement, partnership development
Staff is seeking discussion and input from CAP members to further development of a of a Parks and
Recreation initiative aimed at a holistic approach to promoting health in Tukwila.
