Please let me know if you have any questions or need additional information about any of the following items. Intergovernmental Update • Waste Management Scholarship Program: Waste Management partnered with the City of Tukwila to provide 2o16 scholarships to Foster High School Students. They reviewed the applications the City received for the Tukwila City of Opportunity Scholarship and selected five students to receive $1,000 scholarships. Waste Management plans to continue collaborating with the City Scholarship program next year. • Council Chat at Foster High School: Teens for Tukwila sponsored a Council Chat at Foster High School on June 3. Over So teens participated in the event to discuss important topics including employment, education and safety. Mayor Ekberg, Council President Duffie, and Councilmembers Robertson, Seal, Hougardy, Quinn and Kruller, also attended. The teens discussed their ideas to address community priorities. II. Community Events • Residential Collection Event: The Tukwila Recycling Program offered a successful event for hard -to- recycle items at Foster High School on May 14. Items received included: 8.19 tons of metals, 15 porcelain toilets and sinks, 126 tires, 16 mattresses and box springs, 3.12 tons of reusable household goods and textiles, l9 propane tanks and 6 tons of bulky wood, 45 gallons of antifreeze, 23 auto /marine batteries, 275 gallons of motor oil /mixed petroleum products, 46 oil filters, and 294o household batteries. The Recycling Program also distributed 19 recycled - content compost bins and 3o recycled content rain barrels at a reduced cost to Tukwila residents. Community Clean -Up Event: The City partnered with Waste Management to offer Tukwila's first Curbside Collection Event on June 1o. The event was very successful. Staff will be meeting with Waste Management to receive a report on items collected and to discuss lessons learned for future events. III. Staff Updates Public Safety • Foster High School Class Discussion: On May 26 Tukwila Police Officers participated in a classroom discussion at Foster High School. A few days later officers responded to a call in a neighboring City, and were approached by an attendee from the classroom discussion. The officer was able to gather some great information from this student. • 17th Annual Mu'tamar Conference: On May 28 Sergeant Boyd and Officer Valdez spoke about the role of law enforcement in the United States and in the community at the 17th Annual Mu'tamar Conference for the East African Islamic Community held at Foster High School. • New Towing Program: Effective June 1 the Police Department moved from a single towing contractorto a rotational (multiple company) towing system. ABC Towing and Skyway Towing are the companies on our rotational tow truck list for all PD impounds and fleet towing needs. • Meeting with Foster High School Bike Club: Community Development staff met with the Foster High School Bike Club to discuss student interest in bicycle facility planning. After school reconvenes in the fall, the Bike Club plans to make a presentation to the City Council about their interest and support for bicycle infrastructure here in Tukwila. Project Updates • TIB Redevelopment— Motel Demolition: Fencing and hydroseeding is scheduled to be completed by June 17. The electrical service connection from Seattle City Light to the two newly erected lights should be up and running by the end of the month. • 53rd Ave S: The City has received responses from 1g of the 46 private property owners along the roadway as to the design option they prefer. A follow -up letter was sent to the owners who did not respond to solicit additional input. • Foster Library Building: The Tukwila School District has announced they have reached an agreement with the King County Library System to purchase the Foster Library building. • TUC Pedestrian /Bicycle Bridge: Bid Opening was held on May 24 with the low bidder, SB Structures, coming in below the engineer's estimate and within budget. The bid award is scheduled for the June loth Regular Council meeting. Selection of a construction management firm should be completed by June 17. • S 144th St Phase II: The bid opening on June 7 only had two bidders and both bids were significantly over the engineer's estimate. Analysis of the bids is underway. • Washington Place: Mayor Ekberg and Economic Development staff toured Washington Place, the 1g story hotel and apartment building that is under construction on Andover Park East.
