Today (June 26, 2016) at 12:20 pm, Tukwila Fire Department was dispatched to a
derailment of a northbound Amtrak Passenger Train in the area of 7300 Fun Center
Way, in Tukwila. First arriving units found a 12 car, one locomotive passenger train with
all 12 cars upright and no visible damage, and a single locomotive slightly leaning as it
(the locomotive) had derailed from the tracks.
Crews quickly determined there were NO injuries to the 236 passengers. They also
determined there was no fuel leaking from the train. The train was traveling 5mph or
less at the time of the derailment.
Cause of the derailment is under investigation. Amtrak and BNSF are working together
to determine the cause.
Amtrak did an excellent job in taking care of passengers in getting them on buses to
continue their trip. There was good communication between responders and Amtrak
officials.
The original dispatch included fire units from Tukwila, Renton, Kent, Burien, South King
County Medic One and several Tukwila Police units. The response went very well from
all points of view. We appreciate all the cooperation between Amtrak, BNSF, Fire,
Police and responding Mutual Aid companies.
