Please let me know if you have any questions or need additional information about any of the following items. I. Intergovernmental Update • World Affairs Council Meeting: On July 27 Mayor Ekberg, Human Services staff and Commander Rick Mitchell attended a World Affairs Council Meeting at the school district. They met with representatives from Germany and answered questions about integrating immigrants and refugees into the community. • Metro Connects Technical Advisory Meeting: Community Development staff attended the July 27 Technical Advisory Committee meeting for Metro Connects, King County Metro's long range transportation plan. Metro provided a summary of the public comments received on the draft Metro Connects plan, and how changes to the plan have been incorporated in response to those comments. The revised Metro Connects plan is currently being reviewed by the King County Executive, and will be referred to the Regional Transit Committee (RTC) in mid - August with an expected adoption date within the first quarter of 2017. • Cedar Hills Regional Landfill Tour: On August 3 Mayor Ekberg, Council President Duff ie, City Administrator Cline and Public Works Director Bob Giberson toured the Cedar Hills Regional Landfill. • Cascade Recycling Center Tour: On August 3 Mayor Ekberg, Council President Duffie, Councilmember Hougardy, City Administrator Cline, Public Works Director Bob Giberson and Council Analyst Laurel Humphrey toured of Cascade Recycling Center in Woodinville hosted by Waste Management • Meeting with School District: On August 4 Mayor Ekberg, Council President Duff ie, City Administrator Cline and Chief Villa, as well as other City staff met with Dr. Coogan and staff from the Tukwila School District to discuss ways the City and School District can partner together to continue to foster positive relationships between students and police officers. • South King County Housing and Homelessness Partnership Meeting: Planning and Human Services staff attended a meeting of the South King County Housing and Homelessness .� We, I City Administrator's Report August so, 2o16 Page 2 Partnership (SKHHP), a sub - regional collaboration to improve, maintain and create quality affordable housing. • Taking Stock 2o16 Project: Community Development Director Jack Pace attended the first meeting of the Puget Sound Regional Council (PRSC) Working Group forthe Taking Stock 2o16 project. PSRC is looking back on recent comprehensive plan updates and regional certification processes, and looking forward to update VISION 204o by engaging with local governments throughout the region and to communicating key findings to the PSRC boards. II. Communitv Events • See You in the Park!: The Second Annual See You in the Park event at Riverton Park was held on July 27. zgo neighbors, community members, and city staff came to the park and enjoyed yummy food, company, and wonderful sunshine while The Bubb(eman performed for the young participants. • Touch -A -Truck Safety and Emergency Preparedness Fair: The annual Touch a Truck event at Westfield Mall was held on July 29. A large variety of vehicles were on hand for kids and families to play on and several exhibitors were onsite to pass out safety information. Attendance was very good. • Be a Part of the Art!: Renowned artist John Fleming is working with the community to paint 26 thirty- foot -long /seven- inch -wide steel blades for artwork to be displayed at the new Tukwila Library. Participants must be 5 and older with kids under 12 accompanied by an adult. Each participant will have a 12 inch section of a blade to paint a personalized flag. The blades will be installed in the plaza outside the new Tukwila Library currently under construction. The event is scheduled for August 20 from 11:ooam — 3:oopm and August 21 from 12:00— 4:oopm at Foster Library. All art supplies provided. Sponsored by the King County Library Foundation, the City of Tukwila. III. Staff Updates Public Safety • 33rd Annual National Night Out: On August 3 elected officials and City Leadership were out in strong numbers to support the 33rd Annual National Night Out. Mayor Ekberg, Council President Duffie, Councilmembers Hougardy, Kruller, McLeod and Quinn, City Administrator Cline and numerous City staff partnered with Tukwila Police and split up into groups to visit several different neighborhoods throughout the evening. Councilmember Robertson hosted a neighborhood event and Councilmember Seal participated in her neighborhood event. • School Safety Patrol Training: The Police Community Liaison officer and School Resource officer attended a School Safety Patrol training day for the 5th graders at Tukwila Elementary. These 5th graders will be the safety crossing officers who flag the cars to stop so students can safely cross the streets to and from school. Project Updates •1 City Administrator's Report August 10, 2016 Page 3 • City of Tukwila Recognized as Best Workplace for Waste Prevention & Recycling: The City of Tukwila made King County's 2016 list of Best Workplaces for Waste Prevention and Recycling for the seventh consecutive year, earning a spot on the Honor Roll. Employees can recycle a range of materials, from office paper, cans, bottles and paper packaging to ink and toner cartridges, mercury- containing light bulbs, and food waste. We also promote recycling and waste reduction among our residents and businesses. • Tukwila International Boulevard Redevelopment— Motel Demolition: The construction project was completed on July 28. The Department of Ecology permit is still open pending completion of erosion control measures. • TUC Pedestrian /Bicycle Bridge: The construction Notice to Proceed was issued for August 15. Groundbreaking is scheduled for August 12. • Tukwila Village: Contractor pulled permits for Building C and started foundation work on buildings D and E. On August 8 the City Council authorized the Mayor to sign a purchase and sale agreement to sell the first phase land to the developer. Developer plans to submit funding application to Washington State Housing Finance Commission on August 15. • Duwamish Gardens /Chinook Wind: On August 1 the month -long in -water work window and the highly anticipated breach of the temporary berm began. The Contractor took advantage of minus low tides to excavate the berm from relatively dry land. The side channel habitat embaymentjoined the Duwamish River for the first time. • Crystal Springs Emergency Surface Water Repair: Emergency repairs are underway at Crystal Spring Park to install a new 18" surface water pipe between the creek inlet and 51st Ave S. A temporary 18" bypass pipe has allowed the water to bypass the damaged pipe section. Proposed construction is scheduled for later this year. • Cascade View SRTS Phase II: An open house was held July 26. Positive feedback was received in agreement with the overall project design concept, including the mini roundabout. Next step is completion of the 300/0 project plans, which are scheduled for the end of August. 61
