Seattle, Washington 98108 Subject: Sperry Building Roof Dear Mr. Larson: ese ' Q1STE' a ' /ONAL �GI" rs,,r!N / / ✓�� You have asked us to review the structural design of the Sperry Flight Center Building located at 6827 South 180th Street in Tukwila, pursuant to the installation of a new roofing overlay throughout the major part of the building roof. Typically, this building roof system is the "Berekeley Panel System" which consists of prefabricated 4 x 8 plywood panels supported by 2 x 4's at 24 inches on center, in turn supported by 4 x 14 Douglas fir sawn timbers span- ning 18 feet, which in turn are supported by glu -lam girders of varying sizes depending upon the span conditions. The building was originally designed for a dead load of 15 lb /sq. ft. and a live load of 25 lb /sq. ft., for a total design load of 40 lb /sq. ft. The original design envisioned a breakdown of the dead load allowance as follows: 6 lb /sq. ft. for framing, :.. 6 lb /sq. ft. for roofing, and 3 lb /sq. ft. miscellaneous allowance for lighting, sprinklers, etc. You have indicated that the existing built -up roof weighs approximately 6 lb /sq. ft. including a gravel layer on top. Your proposed re- roofing system would remove 1 -1/2 to 2 pounds of gravel and add, in turn, a 3/4- inch rigid insulation board, three plies of fiberglass sheets, and one flood coat, all of which weigh an estimated 2 -1/2 lb /sq. ft. You, therefore, would be adding a net added load of from 1/2 to 1 lb /sq. ft. over that existing at the present time. We consider that this very slight additional load is well within the struc- tural capability of the roof as designed.
