BUILDING DEPT, Dear Ed: The framing for the existing roof for the above- referenced building was reviewed to determine if it could support the addition of 2.4 psf of additional roofing material. The structure consists of 2 x 12 framing over glu- laminated beams. Framing for an addition which was made in 1976 consists of a Berkley panel roof system of 2 x 4 joists and 4 x 14 purlins supported by glu- laminated beams. Attached is a plan showing the existing roof framing and calculations for determining load capacities of the framing members. The roof is capable of supporting an additional 2.4 psf of load under the following conditions. that the 2 x 4 joists in the addition do not support the weight of any mechanical equipment or sprinkler lines. These members will be overstressed if any equipment loads are supported by them. All other members are satisfactory and can support all loads including mechanical. equipment. Also verify that the roof is sufficiently sloped for draina9e (approximately 1/4" /foot) and . that no areas exist where ponding of rain water may occur.
