It is my understanding that you closed the retail jean store opened by North To Alaska, Inc. at 307 Upland Drive on this day for building code violations. I indicated to you that this closure has resulted in the loss of $500 to $600 a day of revenue to North To Alaska, Inc. which loss of revenue is crucial to its operation. You indicated to me that it appeared that the application and exhibits, apparently for a building permit for the construction of a wall and other improvements within the warehouse to bring the retail operation to code had just been received and appeared to be complete. You also indicated that it was necessary for the permit to be reviewed by your department (Building) which you would complete within twenty-four hours, the City Planning Department and the Fire Department. The purpose for the Planning Department review was to determine whether or not the zoning at this location permitted retail sales and we have checked the City Code and determined that retail sales are permitted within this zone. Consequently, we would expect that the Planning Department review be quite short. While we understand the need for the City to enforce its regulations, you must understand that the action taken today by the City has resulted in severe damage to this business. Your action in closing the business would appear to be excessively severe given the difficulty in returning telephone calls with North To Alaska employees and their attempts to communicate with you. Nonetheless, North To Alaska has no desire to become engaged in a conflict with the City, however, you must understand the necessity for reopening its store at the earliest possible date.
