The engine is preconditioned for fast starting by maintaining an engine jacket water temperature of approximately 90 °F (32 °C) while the unit is shutdown. Other benefits include fast warm-up, fuel saving on starting, and extended battery life. Engine jacket water temperature is controlled by an adjustable thermostat located at tho top of tho hoator. Tho thermostat is adjustable from 60.180 °F (16• 82 °C). A temperature- sensing bulb at tho heater outlet signals tho thermostat switch to turn on and off according to desired temperature setting. Water is heated in tho circulation hoator and rises to tho engine by means of a thermosyphoning affect, utilizing a single - phase electric heating element. This action Printed in U.B.A. EDS 159.0 Date 7.92 displaces an equal amount of cool water back to the heater. When the engine is running, there will always be a flow of water through the heater. There are two tank -type circulation heaters available -- identical in size and shape, 120 V, 3 kW and 240 V, 3 kW. There are various mounting groups for each engine in the product line. Depending on the engine size, one or two heaters are used. Single -phase voltages Toss than nominal aro not harmful but will reduce heating effort. Voltages higher than 120% of nominal affect service life. Multiple units must be wired in parallel to avoid excessive voltages across contacts. Circulation-typo jacket water heaters aro preferred to In -block -typo units. The in -block unit element Is actually Inserted in tho engine jacket system and heats tho surrounding water, causing a convection current flow. Usually, insufficient space is available low in tho block to insert a properly sized in -block element. Placement high in the cooling system will not permit natural circulation. Also, placement in a hose or coolant lino generally will not provide sufficient capacity. Generally, In -block heaters do not have C 1992 Caterpillar Inc. (Fite in Cat Technical Mani aft t.EKX3301 thermostats and are on all the time, even when the engine is running. This shortens element life. For dealers/customers who wish to purchase and install their own jacket water systems, we offer the following suggestions: 1. Mount heater as low as possible. 2. Cold water inlet to heater should be from lowest possible point in the engine cooling system. 3. Avoid cold water loops (A) (Figure 1) .. any situation where cold water must rise to enter the heater. 4. Join hot water side of heater near top of engine cooling system but below the thermostats. Caution: Do not create hot water loops (B). Hot waater line should enter engine In either a horizontal or slightly inclined plane. If the engine is entered as shown in (B), the possibility of forming a steam pocket is present. This can be damaging to tho system. 5. Use the same pipe size (or larger) as heater connections. Note: Never tum on the circulation hoator until the hoator tank is full of water. Running the hoator at low water !owls will bum out the heating element. Ambient Conditions Heaters offered in the price lists will maintain jacket water temperatures to 90 °F (32 °C) minimum with the following air ambient temperatures.
