A generator will also be added outside the existing building. The existing slab is pile supported and designed for two hundred fifty (250) psf. Earth Consultants, Inc. (ECI) provided the referenced study for the construction of the existing building and observed the installation of the driven timber piles. Our borings for the referenced study encountered thirty (30) to thirty -five (35) feet of loose sands and soft to very soft silts and clays underlain by dense to very dense sand and gravel to the depth of our explorations. According to original pile location plan, the timber piles were spaced approximately twelve (12) feet on center in slab areas. if additional piles are installed at six foot on center, the loading on the new piles would be 11.9 tons according to the structural engineer, Based on the loading for the new piles, we recommend the use of six -inch diameter steel pipe piles. Six inch diameter piles driven to refusal may be designed for an axial capacity of twelve (12) tons. We anticipate pile lengths will be on the order of forty five (45) to fifty five (55) feet. The steel pipe piles should consist of schedule 40 steel piles. The piles should be driven to refusal with a hydraulic hammer. Refusal criteria for six inch piles driven with an 1500 pound hydraulic hammer is defined as 14 to 16 seconds per inch with a minimum of 750 blows per minute. The pipe piles can be easily spliced inside the existing building. McDowell Northwest, Inc, is a local company with experience driving these piles. McDowell's phone number is (425) 251.8570. ECi should be on -site on a full -time basis during installation of the piles to confirm depths and refusal criteria. We do not anticipate the need for pile load tests, if we observe the installation of the piles and the depth of the piles are as expected. Our referenced report included pile load tests for the driven timber piles. With structural loading as expected, total settlement in the range of one -half inch is anticipated with differential movement of about one - quarter inch. Most of the anticipated settlements should occur during construction as dead Toads are applied. We understand the generator pad has a four foot deep and one foot wide grade beam footing with loading of one thousand (1000) pounds per foot. The generator may either be supported on driven pipe piles as recommended above for the slab or on a corYipensating foundation. If the compensating foundation option is used we recommend placing a connecting slab on the bottom of the grade beams to add stiffness to the foundation. Earth Conaultanta. 'nc. CITY OF TUKWIL a JUL - 6 a11ol PERMIT CENT 4i, Mortenson January 6, 2000 E- 2579 -27 Page 3 The compensating foundation would include excavating the generator pad footprint to two feet below the bottom of the grade beams, placing a layer of geotextile fabric (Mirafi 600X or approved equivalent) and placing two feet of structural fill below the grade beams. The overexcavation should extend a minimum of two feet beyond the grade beam. The area under the generator slab baYwean the grads beams would net be backfilled to reduce the loading on the subgrada soils. Sattlarrant of one to one and one -half inches should be expected with this foundation option. Groundwater should be expected in the excavation. If groundwater is encountered, the fill should consist of crushed rock with a minimum size of two inches. If groundwater is not encountered, the structural fill should consist of a fairly well graded granular material having a maximum particle size of six inches and no more than five percent fines passing the No. 200 sieve based on the minus 3.4 -inch fraction, Structural fill should be placed in horizontal lifts not exceeding twelve (12) inches in loose thickness and compacted to a minimum of 90 percent of its laboratory maximum dry density determined in accordance with ASTM Test Designation D- 1557 -91 (Modified Proctor). The fill materials should be placed at or near their optimum moisture content, It Is our opinion the potential for Liquefaction over the site during a selsm(c event Is moderate. Isolated areas may be subject to liquefaction, however, the effect on the pile supported structure is anticipated to be minimal, We estimate liquefaction induced settlement would be in the range of the post - constructed settlements discussed above. In accordance with Table 16 -J of the 1997 UBC, a site profile of SE should be used for design. ECI should be retained to provide geotechnical services during construction and pile installation. This is to observe compliance with the design concepts, specifications or recommendations and to allow design changes in the event subsurface conditions differ from those anticipated prior to the start of construction.
