CONSTRUCTION INSPECTION AND MATERIAL TESTING NATIONALLY ACCREDITED LABORATORY Re: GTE PCS Site, Doubletrec Inn Tower, Tukwila, WA, AAR No.: 97 -144, Permit No.: MI 96 -0023 Dear Mr. Motland: On April 2, 1997, representatives of AAR visited the site to perform tension pull tests on 6 threaded rods supporting the new "Antenna Tower" structure for the above referenced project. We met with Jerry Thompson of Merit Co. and briefly discussed test procedures with him. He provided us with the bracing pipes and shim as planned. Tests were performed without moving the support channels. One rod was unscrewed at a time and tested utilizing a hydraulic jack device with an attached calibrated pressure gauge. Bracing pipes were used as a support for jack cylinder during the tests. All bolts were pulled to 2000 lb., as requested by the structural engineer of the record, Darrold Bolton. The 2000 lb. loads were applied and kept for approximately one minute and released if no sign of reduced load was observed on the gauge. Test items and concrete wall surrounding the rods were examined for any cracks or dislocation of the rods. No movement of the supporting rods were encountered. Our test results indicate that all threaded rods were capable of taking 2000 Ib. load and no sign of yielding was observed during tests. ou need additional information, please feel free to call me at 206- 881 -5812. Date: March 26, 1997 Re: Tension Test, Support 5/8" Rods Project: GTE PCS Site, Doubletree Inn Tower, Tukwila, WA, AAR No.: 97 -144 In conjunction with the City of Tukwila request, we met with Jerry Thompson of Merit Company, on March 15, 1997, to discuss and determine a procedure to verify the adequacy of epoxy rod tension load capacity. This was required by the City Official since epoxy rod installation was not inspected by a special inspector during construction. There are 6 rods installed on the existing wall to hold the already in place tower structure. As a result of our telephone conversation with the engineer of the record, Darrold Bolton, on March 26, 1997, a 2.0001b. tension load capacity is required for each 5/8" threaded rod and all 6 rods need to be tested for verification. Below is our proposed procedure to test the above referenced rods: 1. Unscrew nuts from each pair of rod at the same elevation. 2. Remove the outside channel 3. Place 3" schedule 40 pipe through each rod. (These pipes will be used as braces between two channels to strengthen the supporting base for the applied test load. The bracing pipes will be provided by the contractor.) 4. Place the outside channel back. 5, screw the nuts on both rods. 6. Extend the rods using a proper coupler. 7. Place the hydraulic jack cylinder against each rod, using nuts and washers. 8. Apply the load of 2000 lb (one rod will be tested at a time). 9. Examine the rod and monitor its movement. 10. Continue testing of each rod until completed. There will be two technicians to perform the tests. They will access the test locations using ladders.
