The comments were presented to you in two memorandums dated April 20, 1998. Stamped /Signed Soils Report In addition to our original design report for the project dated February 23, 1998, we are attaching a stamped version of our March 25, 1998 surcharge recommendations for the building pads. 8 -inch Sanitary Sewer — Building Pad "D" Per our discussions on Friday, April 24, we estimate that approximately 2 to 6 inches of settlement will occur beneath the surcharge program for Building D. We estimate differential settlements on the order of 4 inches in 50 feet. The settlements may cause a gentle downwarping of the existing sanitary sewer pipe, and possibly more distress at the pipe joints. We understand that the sanitary sewer is currently not in service, and that it will be reconnected following removal of the surcharge. We recoaunend that the pipe be inspected and water tested following the surcharge period to assess whether repairs are necessary prior to reconnection. Artesian Well— Building Pad "C" We understand that a 2 -inch diameter galvanised pipe connecting to an artesian well was discovered in the vicinity of proposed Building Pad "C" during the late 1970s. Based on our review of the sketch provided by City of Tukwila and discussions with Ted Freemire, Public Works Operations Manager, the well is located roughly at the midpoint of the proposed west building wall for Building Pad "C ". This corresponds to a distance of about 120 feet north of the start of the radius on the northeast corner of the intersection of South 180' Street and Southcenter Parkway, and approximately 30 feet east of Southcenter Parkway. We also understand that the pipe/well was shut off by attaching a valve to the pipe at a location approximately 17 feet west of the well or 13 feet from Southcenter Parkway. We recommend that we be on site to obtain additional information regarding the well /pipe configuration, well diameter, quantity of flow, etc. during the initial stages of the asphalt breakup. Recommendations to the proper abandonment can be made at that time. SUIRJECT: Surcharge Recommendations -NE Comer of South 11106' Street and Souebcanter Rahway This memorandum placate detailed surcharge recommendation* for two proposed building pads to be located at the above referenced intersection at the MBK Northwest Parkway Superanter project in Tukwila, Washington. We previously presented preload/au/charge recommendations for the overall project are in our design report for the project dated February 23, 1998. This memorandum presents mote specific recomunsndatioqt for the planned buildings to be located on the northeast corner of the intersection of South 180• Str and Soahthceater Parkway. The recommendations are provided to supplement, not 'upgrade, our previous recommendations. We understand that the building pads will be located within the existing parking lot where existing grades range from approximately Elevation 26 to 28 feet. We also understand that less dims 1'h feet of fill will be placed to achieve slab subgrade elevation for these structures. Floor loads are expected to range from about 100 to 125 psf and column Toads are expected to be less than about 150 kips. For a 30-day surcharge program, we recommend a 5- foot -high surcharge be placed above the proposed finished floor elevations to induce settlements in these building areas. Based on our calculations, the surcharge height can be reduced to 3 feet -thick if a six -week period is available. The crest of the surcharge should extend 5 feet outside the building footprints. Surcharge fill need be compacted -only to the extent necessary to support construction equipment. The surcharge surface should be sealed and crowned to promote runoff of surface water. Following the surcharge period, the excess fdl can be removed from the building area and used as structural fill or surcharge fin in other areas. We recommend that severe' settlement monitoring plates be installed prior to placing any new or additional fill is the building areas.
