Part 3 - Vapor Retarders 3.01 General A. Vapor retarders are essentially impermeable membranes designed to retard the flow of water vapor into the insulation of the rooting system. Condensation of this vapor in the roof insulation can impair the thermal resistance of the insulation and ultimately lead to failure of the insulation, deck and the roofing system. Water vapor migrates from areas of high pressure to areas of low vapor pressure. Water vapor in its gaseous state creates few problems within the building structure if it is allowed to escape to drier outside air. When water vapor permeates into the roof insulation, It can condense on the underside surface of the roofing membrane. This condition is particularly likely to occur at roof insulation joints. The collection of moisture at the roof insulation joints will manifest itself in ridges, or "picture framing" of the roof insulation joints on the roofing surface. Inorganic roofing materials are much less subject to this condition than are organic reinforcing materials. 6. The requirement for a vapor retarder is the sole responsibility of the architect and /or engineer with input provided by the building owner in accordance with current engineering formulas and vapor theory. The owner must provide information as to the current or future planned use of the structure. Note: The vapor retarder Is not Included In the U.S. lntec Roof Guarantee. 3.02 Design Consideration A. In general, the following guidelines could be used for determining whether or not a vapor retarder should be considered: 1. buildings in areas where the average January temperature is 40 °F (4.4 °C) or less; 2. buildings which are humidified or in which operations generate excessive amounts of moisture and relative humidity in excess of 50 %, i.e., paper and textile mill's, laundries, swimming pools, brew- eries, etc. B. The Case ForThe Use Of A Vapor Retarder ( "Manual of Built -Up Roofing Systems" American Institute of Architects, by C.W. Griffin): 1. a vapor retarder can insure the continued thermal resistance of insulation sandwiched between the vapor retarder and the mem- brane; 2. a vapor retarder provides a good safeguard against vapor migration in case a building's use changes from a "dry" use to a "wet" use. C. The Case Against The Use Of A Vapor Retarder ( "Manual of Built -Up Roofing Systems" American Institute of Architects, by C.W. Griffin): 1, the vapor retarder, together with the roofing membrane, seals within the roof sandwich entrapped moisture that can eventually destroy the insulation, help split or wrinkle the membrane or, in gaseous form, blister it; 2. in the event of a roof leak through the membrane, the vapor retarder will trap the water in the insulation and release it through punctures that may be some lateral distance from the roof leak, thus making leak discovery more difficult. A large area of insulation may be saturated before the punctured membrane can be repaired; 3. a vapor retarder is a disadvantage in summer, when vapor migration is generally downward through the roof (hot, humid air can infiltrate the roofing sandwich through the vents, or through diffusion through the roof; it may condense on the vapor retarder itself); 4. a vapor retarder may be the weakest horizontal shear plane in the roofing sandwich. Failure at the vapor retarder /Insulation interface can result in splitting of the membrane. At the least, the vapor retarder introduces an additional component whose shear resistance may be critical to the membrane's integrity. Part 4 - Insulation 4.01 General A. The function of roof insulation is to provide a smooth, dry, clean and firmly attached substrate to receive U.S. inter membranes while furnishing insulating value against heat transmittal. Roof Insulation is not part of the roof membrane. B. Insulation boards not manufactured by U.S. Intec are not considered part of the roofing system and are not warranted by U.S. Intec. C. The selection of insulation type, thicknesses, and configurations is the responsibility of the architect, engineer, or owner. D. The positive attachment of insulation over the substrate to which it is Installed is essential. Insulation shall be attached according to the requirements of the insulation manufacturer, trade associations, local codes and insurance underwriting agencies. U.S. lntec is not responsible for damage to roofing membranes or flashing from movement or wind uplift due to Inadequate attachment of roof insulation to roof deck. E. U.S. Intec reserves the right to accept or reject any roof insulation as an acceptable substrate for attachment of U.S. Intec roof systems. F. Sprayed -in -place polyurethane foam is not an acceptable substrate to apply U.S. lntec roofing membranes. G.The insulation should be approved by Factory Mutual and Underwriters Laboratories. H. Expanded or extruded polystyrene insulation boards must be a minimum of 11/2 Ib (0.68 kg) density, and require a overlay of mechanically fastened 1/2" (13 mm) perlite insulation. Insulation joints of the coverboard must be taped prior to mopping application. I. Polyisocyanurate insulation boards, require a minimum overlay of '/2" (13 mm) perlite insulation prior to mopping a base or interply sheet to the insulation. J. Cellular foam glass insulation boards must have an overlay of a minimum ' /2" (13 mm) thickness of perlite insulation. K. When mechanically fastening glass fiber insulation boards, plasticplates are required unless a mopped overlay cf minimum '/2" (13 mm) thickness of perlite insulation Is used. L. Thefollowing are minimum restrictions and requirementsthat apply to the acceptable insulation types, thicknesses, and uses: 1. minimum allowable thickness for insulation that will be mechanically fastened to a deck or mopped to deck overlay felts is 1/2" (13 mm) and must be able to withstand foot traffic; 2. maximum allowable thickness fora single layer Insulation that can be mechanically fastened to a deck or mopped to a deck is 3'1(7.5 cm) unless otherwise approved by U.S. Intec In writing; 3. where the total thickness of a Insulation layer exceeds 3" (7.5 cm), a second layer of insulation Is required. The total insulation thickness must not exceed 5" (13 cm) unless otherwise approved by U.S. Inter in writing; 4. vapor retarders over steel decks are to be "sandwiched" between two layers of insulation (refer to Section 5, Part 7, Item 7.01). The bottom insulation layer must be of fire -rated type and nominal thickness - top layer to be of greater thickness (higher "R" value) than the bottom insulation layer. 4.02 AcceptableTypes The following insulation types are acceptable for use as a substrate for U.S. Inter roofing membranes (NOTE: Preface -Type insulation boards are recommended): 1. Perlite, USI Board, 1/2" Universal Substrate Insulation, USI Taper Board (FS HH -1- 529 /ASTM C 728); 2. Cellular Foam Glass (FS HH -1.551 E /ASTM C 552); 3. Glass Fiber Board (FS HH- 1.526/ASTM C 726); 4.
