From discussion with you, the bin will be tall and will have two compartments that will each have a capacity of approximately 114 tons. The bin will be supported on a total of nine legs. We understand that the bin unit will be located north of the existing rendering building, near existing silo storage. It is also our understanding that The owner would like to construct the bin's foundations on top of an existing on -grade concrete slab. Based on previous oorings conducted on the site by our firm and others, we anticipate that the subsurface conditions consist of loose to medium -dense sand and silty sand. These alluvial deposits are moderately compressible under new loads, and are susceptible to seismic liquefaction, It is our opinion that conventional foundations can be used to support the blending hin if snrnr noticeable differential settlement across the foundation is acceptable, We recommend that a mat foundation be utilized to create more uniform loading below the individual legs, and to span across areas of looser soils. This mat can be designed for a maximum allowable bearing pressure of 2,000 pounds per square foot. We anticipate that differential settlement across the mat will be on the order of one to 2 inches under static loads, Much larger settlement could result from liquefaction and soil consolidation ins \he event of a major earthquake. It is possible that the new foundation may cause some additional settlement of nearby structures, This should not present a structural concern, but the owner should be made aware of this risk. Also, the soils beneath the site are liquefiable. The use of the mat foundation will reduce the potential for catastrophic foundation failure in the event of seismic liquefaction during an earthquake. If the mat is constn:rtedi no top of the existing pavement, at least three holes should first be cored through the concrete so that we can verify that the soils immediately beneath are moderately compact. If the soils are loose, or are silts, it will be necessary place at least 2 feet of imported structural fill under the mat foundation, This fill could be placed above the slab, or the existing soil could be excavated to a depth of 2 feet before placing the imported fill.
