SUBJECT: Tukwila International Blvd (TIB) Light Rail Station Traffic Congestion
ISSUE
Traffic and pedestrian congestion at the TIB Light Rail Station on game days of area sports
teams.
BACKGROUND
At a previous Transportation Committee meeting, it was brought to the attention of the
committee of continual problems at the TIB Light Rail Station with parking, traffic congestion,
and pedestrians crossing the roadway, specifically on the dates that the Mariners, Seahawks,
Huskies, and Sounders have games in downtown Seattle.
It was reported to the committee that numerous persons attempt to use the Tight rail to travel to
the games. On those days, the volume of fans adds to the volume of normal commuters,
vehicles, and pedestrian traffic that use the station. This combination causes an overflow of
vehicles to park on residential streets around the station when the parking lots are full.
At the 10/3/16 Transportation Committee meeting, the committee had requested the police
department's input and assessment of this issue.
DISCUSSION
In order to analyze the issue, I contacted and used the department resources listed below.
1) Crime analyst for statistical analysis:
Statistics were gathered to be discussed at the meeting.
2) Feedback and observation from the Traffic Unit, Patrol Shifts, and CPT Team:
Feedback and observations to be discussed.
3) Possible solutions:
Solutions to be presented and discussed from the power point presentation.
FINANCIAL IMPACT
Salaries and overtime for traffic control, security, and on site police presence.
