DATE ATTACHMENTS 11/07/16 Informational Memorandum dated 10/10/2016 3 El City of Tukwila Allan Ekberg, Mayor INFORMATIONAL MEMORANDUM TO: CITY COUNCIL a FROM: MAYOR EKBERG DATE: OCTOBER 10, 2016 SUBJECT: APPOINTMENTS TO THE ARTS COMMISSION AND EQUITY AND DIVERSITY COMMISSION ISSUE There are vacant positions on the Boards and Commissions listed below. I am recommending the following appointments: Arts Commission Position #6: This position is currently vacant. I have attached the application of Helen Enguerra. Helen has lived in Tukwila for 11 years and during her time here she has discovered a true love for the performing arts. She is excited to give back to the community by serving on the Arts Commission and helping Tukwila create platforms where Tukwila residents from other populations can share their culture. am recommending she be appointed to Position #6. The term for this position will expire on December 31, 2017. Equity and Diversity Commission Position #5: This position is currently vacant. I have attached the application of Dr. Nancy Coogan. As you are aware, Dr. Coogan is the Superintendent for the Tukwila School District. I am recommending she be appointed to Position #5. The term for this position will expire on July 31, 2018. Position #6: The term of Thong Ung expired July 31, 2016. 1 am recommending that Mr. Ung be reappointed to this position. His new term will expire on July 31, 2018. Position #9: This position is currently vacant. I have attached the application of Dat Tran for your review. Mr. Tran is a Tukwila resident and is interested in getting involved in local government. I am recommending he be appointed to position #9. The term for this position will expire on July 31, 2018. RECOMMENDATION I am recommending the appointments as listed above take place at the November 7, 2016 Council Meeting. As a Rotarian we are in service to community, as well as national and international efforts. I am on the Board of Stillwaters ( a non-profit organization in Tukwila) that feeds homeless children and their families with a weekly backpack program. Additional time is spent assisting families in the Tukwila Community as needs arise which include funeral services, assistance with meals, collective prayer. I further have a solid relationship and partnership with all faith based organizations and this year prepared a day of service cleaning up two of the three elementary schools! Hobbies/Inte rests: hiking, researching best practices for education, soccer, and being in service to others. Qualifications os related bm this position: help facilitate the Race and Equity Committee at the district level. Race and Equity is the top priority as tated in the superintendent's State of the District. We have implemented a Race and Equity policy as a istrict (the second in the state of Washington) and are now working on Race and Equity procedures. he city and district must move into healing as a community in order to be a community that focuses on ie positive aspects of what this rich diversity offers as well as the gifts that each community member rings.
