Product Data: Traffic- coating manufacturer's literature including written instructions for evaluating, preparing, and treating substrate; technical data including tested physical and performance properties; application instructions, and details. 1. Include VOC content of components. 2. Traffic- coating manufacturer's color chart. B. Samples: For each type of traffic coating required, provide stepped samples on rigid backing large enough to illustrate build -up of traffic coatings, of same thickness and material indicated for Work. C. Applicator Qualifications: 1. Applicator Qualifications: Qualified firm that is approved, authorized, or licensed by traffic - coating manufacturer to apply traffic coating and that is eligible to receive traffic- coating manufacturer's warranty. Must have installations of specified materials in local area in use for minimum of five years. 1. Employ foreman trained by traffic- coating manufacturer and with minimum of five years' experience as foreman on similar projects, who is fluent in English, to be on site at all times during Work. B. Mock -ups: Prior to start of Work or purchase of material, apply traffic coating to at least 100 square feet of substrate, at locations determined by Architect /Engineer, to demonstrate surface preparation, joint and crack treatment, sheet metal flashing, reinforcing mesh, thickness, texture, color, and standard of workmanship. Substitution of materials or procedures will not be allowed. Mock -up is to be true representation of project system that will be installed. 1. After surface preparation is complete, two 4 inch diameter cores from the mock -up area will be removed and examined petrographically to observe if there is micro- cracking of the surface. 2. Adhesion testing will be performed to demonstrate that bond strength to substrate and inner bond strength between inner plies meets project requirements. 3. If Architect/Engineer determines mock -up does not comply with requirements, modify mock -up or construct new mock -up until mock -up is approved. Contractor's site foreman, traffic- coating manufacturer's technical representative, traffic - coating Applicator, and Architect /Engineer shall attend. 1.6 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING A. Refer to Section 01 60 00 Product Requirements for general product delivery, storage, and handling requirements. 13. Delivery 1. Deliver materials to Project site in original packages with seals unbroken, labeled with traffic- coating manufacturer's name, product brand name and type, date of manufacture, lot number, and directions for storing and mixing with other components. C. Storage 1. Store materials in original, undamaged containers in clean, dry, protected location on raised platforms with weather - protective, vented coverings, within temperature range required by traffic- coating manufacturer. 2. Quartz silica (sand) must be kept dry during delivery, storage, and handling. 3. Traffic- coating manufacturer's standard packaging and covering is not considered adequate weather protection. 4. Store closed containers away from heat, direct sunlight, oxidizing agents, strong acids, and strong alkalis. Keep products away from open fire, flame or any ignition source. D. Handling 1. Handle materials in such a manner as to preclude damage and contamination with moisture or foreign matter. 2. Keep away from open fire, flame, or any ignition source. Vapors may form explosive mixtures with air. Avoid skin and eye contact with this material. Avoid breathing fumes. 3. Do not eat, drink, or smoke in the application area. 4. Follow the materials manufacturer's recommendations and requirements for personal protective equipment when handling and installing the materials. Conspicuously mark damaged or opened containers or containers with contaminated materials, and remove from site as soon as possible. 6. Remove and replace materials that cannot be applied within stated shelf life. 1.7 PROJECT CONDITIONS A. Verify existing dimensions and details prior to installation of materials. Notify Architect/Engineer of conditions found to be different than those indicated in Contract Documents. Architect/Engineer will review situation and inform Contractor and Applicator of changes. 13. Comply with Owner's limitations and restrictions for site use and accessibility. C. Environmental Limitations: 1. Apply traffic coating when existing and forecast weather conditions permit traffic coating to be installed according to traffic- coating manufacturer's written instructions and warranty requirements. a. Submit an installation plan that details how environmental conditions will be controlled to meet coating manufacturer's requirements. Plan will be approved by Owner and traffic coating manufacturer before work commences. Do not apply traffic coating under following conditions, unless otherwise approved by traffic - coating manufacturer and approved by Architect/Engineer. b. Do not apply materials during precipitation or in the event there is a probability of precipitation during application. Take adequate precautions to ensure that materials, applied membrane, and building interiors are protected from possible moisture damage or contamination. c. Do not apply when substrate temperature is below 50 degrees F or less than 5 degrees F above dew point, or outside of range recommended by traffic- coating manufacturer. d. Do not apply when ambient temperature is below 40 degrees F or outside of range recommended by traffic- coating manufacturer. e. Do not apply to damp or wet substrate; when relative humidity exceeds 85 percent; in snow, rain, fog, or mist; or when snow, rain, fog, or mist is forecast during application or curing period. Apply only to frost -free substrate. 2. Remove only as much of existing traffic coating as can be prepared and new traffic coating installed in one day, unless provisions are implemented to maintain water tightness in interim or larger removal areas are approved by Owner's Representative. a. Provide temporary protection as needed if water tightness is compromised. b. Do not begin removal of existing traffic coating when weather conditions are not conducive to maintaining water tightness or for application of new traffic coating. D. Install materials in strict accordance with safety requirements required by traffic- coating manufacturer, Material Safety Data Sheets, and local, state, and federal rules and regulations. E. Maintain adequate ventilation during preparation and application of traffic- coating materials. Notify Owner at least 1 week in advance of Work with materials with noxious vapors. Review application schedule and venting precautions with Owner prior to beginning application. F. During rehabilitation work, existing conditions may be encountered which are not known or are at variance with drawings and specifications. Notify Architect/Engineer of conditions that may interfere with proper execution of Work or jeopardize integrity of new traffic coating prior to proceeding with Work. 1.8 SEQUENCING A. Primer Installation 1. After the concrete surfaces are shotblasted and surface repair preparation has been completed, install the primer before installing the repair paste and deck leveling materials. 2. Existing Conditions: It is expected that the existing concrete deck contains moisture. The specified primer is specifically formulated to contain moisture and limit hydrostatic pressure on the underside of the new traffic coating system. The repair paste and deck leveling materials shall be installed above the primer. This will prevent moisture contact and degradation of the repair materials that could occur if installed below the primer. 1.9 WARRANTY A. Manufacturer's Warranty: 1. Single source written warranty, signed by traffic- coating manufacturer, including all products that will be utilized in the total traffic coating system. a. Repair or replace traffic coating system including primers manufactured by sources other than the named waterproofing manufacturer that do not comply with requirements; that do not remain watertight; that fails in adhesion, cohesion, or general durability; that experiences abrasion or tearing failure not due to misuse; that experiences surface crazing, fading or chalking; or that deteriorates in a manner not clearly specified by submitted traffic- coating manufacturer's data as inherent quality of material for application indicated. Warranty does not include deterioration or failure of traffic coating due to failure of substrate prepared according to requirements, formation of new substrate cracks exceeding 1/16 inch in width, fire, vandalism, or snowplow abuse. b. Provide access to warranty repair and replacement areas during repairs. 2. Warranty Period: 10 years after Substantial Completion date. B. Applicator's Warranty: 1. Written warranty, signed by Applicator, including a. Repair or replace traffic coating system including primers and that do not comply with requirements; that do not remain watertight; that fails in adhesion, cohesion, or general durability; that experiences abrasion or tearing failure not due to misuse; that experiences surface crazing, fading, or chalking; or that deteriorates in manner not clearly specified by submitted traffic- coating manufacturer's data as inherent quality of material for application indicated. Source Limitations: Obtain materials through one source from single traffic- coating manufacturer, except as specified. Provide materials not available from traffic- coating manufacturer from sources approved by traffic- coating manufacturer. Provide new materials. B. VOC Content: Provide materials that comply with local VOC limits. C. System: Install the different coats and plies in the mil thickness specified by the system manufacturer. Uniformly clean concrete surfaces by abrasive blast, according to ASTM D 4259, to expose top surface of fine aggregate and provide sound surface, free of laitance, dirt, and other loose or foreign material. Use self - contained, recirculating, blast - cleaning apparatus. a. Water blasting to prepare the concrete surface will not be allowed. 2. Remove grease, oil, asphalt solids, form- release agents, paints, curing compounds, and other penetrating contaminants or film- forming coatings from concrete. 3. Abrasively clean wall surfaces that will receive waterproof coating. a. Under the Base Bid Work: 1) For clarification: the terms "wall surfaces" does not include the vertical curb faces that transition between parking decks and sidewalks. Curb faces shall be prepared in a manner that produces the same level of quality as that specified for horizontal surfaces. 2) Lightly abrade or otherwise prepare surfaces to receive new top coat. b. Under Alternate 1: Remove existing traffic coating system from vertical concrete surfaces. Consult with the materials manufacturers regarding removal or preparation of the existing coating system on metal and panel substrates. c. Do not sandblast metal curbs of mechanical equipment. Do not sandblast surfaces with panel substrates. d. If media blasting is used, then control the blasting to minimize the dispersion of blast grit or media. No grit or media will be allowed to enter the building. e. Protect adjacent surfaces from damage or overspray. 4. Remove remaining loose material and clean surfaces according to ASTM D4258. C. Primer Installation 1. Before primer is installed, allow pull testing of prepared surface as specified in Article 3.4 of this Section. 2. Install at temperatures between 50 and 90 degrees F. 3. For best results, apply primer when the vapor drive in the slab is toward the interior. Typically, this occurs in the later afternoon hours. If primer is applied in the morning, moisture emitting from the slab as the substrate heats up my leave pin - holing in the cured primer. 4. Clean surfaces to be primed of dust, debris, and other substances that could inhibit the bonding of the primer to the substrate. 5. Mix components of primer in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions 6. Pour the mixed primer onto the substrate and spread with a squeegee. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for coverage rates. 7. Back roll the primer at right angles to the squeegee application. Ensure that coverage is complete and evenly distributed. 8. Allow the primer a minimum 4 hours to cure. Install traffic coating within 48 hours after primer has cured. 9. Blisters, pin- holes, and other discontinuities in the primer application shall be repaired before traffic coat installation. 10. Sanded texture: At locations where the leveling material shall be installed over the primer, provide a sanded finish to the primer to provide better mechanical bond between the leveling materials and the primer. Repair cracks, joints, spalls, and voids on vertical or horizontal surfaces 2. Prepare cracks and control joints for repair a. Cracks wider than 1/16 inch (1.5 mm) shall be ground open to a width and depth of 3/16 inch. b. Grind control joints to a width and depth of 3/16 inch. c. Grind crack smooth and uniform without fins or other protrusions left in the ground crack. d. Clean prepared cracks and joints of dust and debris using water and oil -free compressed air. 3. Prepare spalls and voids for repair a. Remove loose and unsound concrete from spalls and voids. b. At spalls, remove additional 2 inches of sound concrete around the perimeter of the spall. The final shape of the repair area shall generally be rectangular with the edges slightly undercut. c. Clean the prepared spalls and voids of dirt, dust, and other material that will inhibit the bond of the repair paste using water and oil -free compressed air. 4. Install repair paste a. Fill cracks, joints, voids, and spalls with repair paste. Work the material into the recesses and tool to ensure that no voids or air pockets are created in the material. b. Apply in maximum lifts of 3/16 inch, or as specified by the material manufacturer. c. If there are spalls or voids 1/2 inch or deeper, notify the Architect /Engineer who will provide a proper repair procedure. E. Clean and prepare primer /concrete substrate according to traffic- coating manufacturer's written instructions. Provide clean, dust -free, and dry substrate. 1. Verify that substrate is sound and is visibly dry and free of moisture. 2. Verify that concrete curbs, expansion joints, and transitions from one surface plane to another (inside and outside corners) are cleanly formed and free of broken edges and excess concrete. 3. Remove concrete fins and projections, concrete splatter, and other irregularities which would prevent monolithic, continuous application of traffic coating. 4. Sandblast or otherwise prepare parapet and wall surfaces that will receive traffic coating. a. Under the Base Bid Work: Lightly sandblast or otherwise prepare surfaces to receive new top coat. b. Under Alternate 1: Remove existing traffic coating system from vertical surfaces. Sandblast or use other means that will not harm the substrate. c. Do not sandblast metal curbs of mechanical equipment. Do not sandblast surfaces with panel substrates. 5. Thoroughly sweep substrate and clean with oil -free compressed air. F. Mask adjoining surfaces not receiving traffic coating to prevent spillage and overspray affecting other construction. G. Close off deck drains and other deck penetrations to prevent spillage and migration of traffic - coating fluids. H. Applicator and traffic- coating manufacturer's representative shall examine substrate to ensure that it is properly prepared and ready to receive traffic coating. Traffic- coating manufacturer's representative shall report in writing to Applicator and Architect /Engineer conditions which will adversely affect traffic- coating system installation or performance. I. Proceed with installation only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected. Commencing installation constitutes acceptance of work surfaces and conditions. 3.3 APPLICATION A. Provide and maintain barricades for pedestrian traffic at traffic- coating areas during application and curing period. Refer to Section 01 50 00 Temporary Facilities and Controls. B. Allow sealant, patch materials, and skim coats to fully cure prior to installing traffic coating. C. General Installation 1. Make allowances for saturation of roller covers and application equipment when calculating resin application rates. 2. Verify that wet film thickness of each component coat complies with requirements every 100 square feet. 3. If work is interrupted for more than 12 hours, or the surface of a catalyzed resin layer becomes dirty or contaminated from exposure to the elements, thoroughly clean the area with cleaner /solvent. Allow a minimum of 20 minutes for the solvent to evaporate before continuing work. Complete the next application procedure within 60 minutes following the evaporation of the cleaner /solvent. 4. Apply new materials a minimum 4 inches up sides of columns, walls, and other vertical surfaces. Extend new coat up vertical surfaces to cover existing coating on vertical surfaces. 5. Omit aggregate on vertical surfaces. 6. If pinholes occur in primer or base coat, apply additional base coat material using flat squeegee or other tool approved by traffic- coating manufacturer, to fill holes before proceeding with subsequent coats. D. Slab Leveling 1. After the primer has been installed and cured, install self - leveling repair material. 2. Areas to be leveled are shown generally on the Drawings a. Confirm in the field the extent of deck area that is depressed and allows water to pond. 3. Clean surface of dirt, dust, and other materials that will inhibit bond of leveling material and primer. 4. Place material on deck and spread over areas of depression. a. Install material only when surface and ambient temperatures are 50 degrees F and rising. b. Material has a limited working life. Place material immediately after mixing. c. Screed material to match the profile of the deck around the perimeter of the depressions. Ensure that the material is sloped to the nearest drain. d. Cure in accordance with the material manufacturer's written instructions. Take precautions as necessary to avoid material from drying or curing too rapidly. 5. Heed the manufacturer's limitations regarding minimum and maximum thicknesses. a. Around the perimeters of the depressions, remove concrete as necessary to provide the proper depth to allow the screeded material to be flush with the existing deck. E. Flashing Installation 1. Complete flashing application prior to the waterproofing membrane application in the field of the roof area. 2. Using masking tape, mask the perimeter of the area to receive the flashing system. Pre- cut fleece to ensure a proper fit at transitions and corners prior to flashing membrane application. 3. Apply a base coat of catalyzed flashing resin to the substrate with a roller or brush at the minimum rate specified by the resin manufacturer. Extend the catalyzed flashing resin 1/8 inch beyond where the fleece reinforcement will be placed. 4. Embed the specified fleece reinforcement into the wet, catalyzed flashing resin base coat using a wet, but not saturated, roller or brush to remove trapped air. Overlap the fleece a minimum of 2 inches. Apply an additional coat of catalyzed flashing resin between layers of overlapping fleece. 5. Apply a finish coat of catalyzed flashing resin immediately following the embedment of the fleece with a roller or brush at the minimum rate specified by the resin manufacturer, ensuring full saturation of the fleece reinforcement. 6. Remove the tape before the catalyzed resin sets. 7. Allow to cure for a minimum of 45 minutes. F. Reinforced Traffic Coating Installation 1. Using cleaner /solvent, wipe flashing membrane and primer surfaces to receive the field membrane. Allow the surface to dry for a minimum 20 minutes before continuing work. 2. Using a roller, apply a layer of catalyzed base resin over the primed substrate at the minimum rate specified by the resin manufacturer. a. Embed the fleece reinforcement into the wet, catalyzed base resin waterproofing layer using a wet, but not saturated, roller to remove trapped air. Overlap side and end laps of the fleece a minimum of 2 inches. b. Apply an additional coat of catalyzed base resin between layers of overlapping fleece. Apply a second coat of catalyzed resin immediately following the embedment of the fleece with an application roller or brush at the minimum rate specified by the resin manufacturer, ensuring full saturation of the fleece reinforcement. c. Allow to cure for a minimum of 45 minutes before application of the wearing layer of resin. 3. Apply a layer of catalyzed waterproofing resin /aggregate filler mixture using a trowel at the minimum rate specified by the waterproofing system manufacturer. Use a spiked roller to remove trowel marks and to even the application of the waterproofing resin /aggregate filler mixture. 4. Immediately broadcast quartz into the wet resin/aggregate filler mixture to refusal. Allow to cure for 2 hours. Sweep excess quartz from the surface. 5. Install color finish using a roller or squeegee at the rate specified by the resin manufacturer. 3.4 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL A. Flood Testing: Flood testing shall be performed at each drain. 1. The area of surrounding deck to be included in the flood test shall be 8 feet square. Build a temporary reservoir and fill with water to a depth of 3 3/4 inches above top lip of the drain opening. 3. Duration of the flood test shall be 24 hours. Cover the test areas to limit water loss to evaporation. 4. Repair areas that show a loss of water. B. Owner's Testing: At Owner's discretion and at Owner's expense, the following testing and quality assurance procedures may be performed by the Architect/Engineer. Pay for costs to retest due to failure of the coating system to meet specified performance standards. Perform remediation at no additional cost to the Owner and to the satisfaction of the Owner and the Architect/Engineer. 1. Membrane Thickness: Architect/Engineer, at their discretion, may take one 1 inch square sample minimum of traffic- coating system for area of traffic- coating installed. Dry film thickness will be measured. a. Dry film thickness is satisfactory if not less than minimum thickness specified by traffic- coating manufacturer or this Section, whichever is greater. b. If dry film thickness too thin, apply additional material, or perform other remedial action recommended by Architect/Engineer. c. Patch sample areas with traffic- coating system. 2. Adhesion Testing:. The Architect /Engineer will perform adhesion tests in general accordance with ASTM D 7234 at different stages of traffic coating system installation. a. The general testing procedure will include adhering metal disks to the surface being tested and pulling on the disks with an apparatus. The psi of the load a failure and the failure plane will be recorded. The following are the criteria for minimal acceptance of each test. 1) Concrete Surface Preparation - 250 psi. 2) Primer Installation - 250 psi and failure in the concrete. 3) Traffic Coating System - 250 psi and failure in the concrete. b. Failed tests will require additional testing to confirm if the failure is a localized or systemic condition. 1) Failure of the concrete surface preparation will require additional preparation work to remedy the failed conditions. 2) Failure of the primer will require removal and reinstallation of failed areas of primer. 3) Failure of the traffic coating system will require the removal and reinstallation of the failed areas of traffic coating. 3. Chain Dragging: Architect /Engineer, at their discretion, may chain drag traffic- coating areas at conclusion of Work to locate debonded areas. Remove and replace debonded areas at no cost to Owner. 4. High Voltage Integrity Testing (HVIT): HVIT will be performed after the application of the primer and the aggregate layer of the traffic coating system. The aggregate layer shall be tested before the application of the top coat. Testing will be performed in general accordance with ASTM D 4787. a. The testing will be performed over a limited area selected at random. If pinholes are found, additional testing may be required to determine the extent of the condition. Contractor to Pay for costs of expanded HVIT testing due to the presence of pinholes in the areas tested b. If pinholes are detected by the HVIT testing, then install additional product to coat over and seal the pinholes.
