The house was built in about 1950 and was built with older stick built type building methods. Some time in the life of the building a crude stairway was added to the attic space, which was then made more or Tess habitable. The front to back ceiling joists which span the living room, with a span of approximately 14.5 feet, and which were not really tied into anything for vertical support, were severely stressed. These ceiling joists are 2" x 4" at 24" centers. Some previous connection between the ceiling joists and the roof rafters was crudely made which did not really help the ceiling joists very much, but which did pull down and bow the rafters. Attached are calculations requiring that each rafter have an additional 2" x 4" HF #2 added,, and that a diagonal 2" x 4" brace be added at each rafter extending from the middle of each rafter span over to the top of the (more or less) centered bearing wall. It would be important that the diagonals firmly butt into each other over this wall, and that the connection at the rafter be a butt connection (that is, not a side splice connection). This rafter upgrade would be required for the entire roof area. The diagonal braces to be added in areas not over the living room should meet at the existing wall nearest the middle of the building.
