The survey was distributed from May through September, at Night Out Against Crime, Tukwila Community Center, Foster Library, City Hall, the police department lobby, Foster High School parent conferences, and to several larger apartment communities. In total, 132 surveys were returned to the police department. The results are represented in the following pages. My husband was in distress. Unfortunately he didn't survive but there were many people involved to save him. Although most of that day is a blur, I felt blanketed with comfort from all who were here that day. The Police are excellent. Work. I may not agree with traffic tickets but they do excellent work. I've had people having sex in my backyard, leaving trash, clothes and other items (condoms, drug para.). Not feeling very safe here. I personally appreciate and admire the dedication, efforts, professionalism of the Tukwila PD. Thank you!!! All my answers pertain to my own personal experience. I have lived in Allentown since 1991. I have never had a theft of property, car or otherwise. I walk my dogs at midnight with no fear. Since closure of sleazy motels, less foot traffic at Grand Terrace Apts. Believe young street people were in- volved with illegal activities all hours of the day, have moved out. Less noise, calls to police for disturbances and fights. Not as much public drinking from renters living there. Don't have friends /family over for fear of their cars being broken into. Noticing a lot of gang taggings on fences, posts, near bus stops in neighborhood. Bothersome as homeowner. Concern of drug dealing in neighborhood (light rail lot /area). Concerned about shooting at SC Mall. Gang issues /problems? My street is very dark at night and if walking my dog, I must carry a good flashlight. I don't feel safe then. I have lived here all my life and feel safe in most areas, day or night. However, I am a little more guarded on International Blvd area after dark, but not enough to keep me from going to the stores there if I need to. My house is a common dropping off point for stolen cars because there is a pullout area for parking in front. Thank you for dropping by our church on National Night Out Against Crime! Appreciate it! We are the block watch for our street and have been for years so meet lots of them International Blvd is im- proving since motels were shut down. We have mail stolen and house and car break ins. Neighbor still get their houses, cars and gas robbed. Bartell's parking lot is awful. Strange drug- ridden or drunks come up and beg at gas stations. Living on S 150th ST, we've experienced many issues with traffic speeding down our dead end street. Neigh- bor's homes and property have been damaged on a number of occasions by cars fleeing police or joyriding. Also issues with parents not observing the no parking signs next to Thorndyke Elem. during drop off and pick up. I've lived in my home since 1980! There's too much craziness, crime, guns shooting every day. I have asked 5 PERCEPTION OF SAFETY Comments (page 2 of 3) for video cameras, more police to enforce the crimes, drug deals, horrible speeding, going through stop signs, people are beating each other on the streets and sidewalks. I wanna feel safe in my neighborhood, but not too safe. I feel unsafe with too many police patrolling the neighborhood. Speeding, running stop signs, not yielding to walkers, gang activity, graffiti, drug activity, disturbances at Sound Mental Health, homeless and or drinking and drug activity behind dumpsters at Sound Mental Health after mall closes. Syringes and used condoms along 62nd AV S and 151st, and 65th AV S. (Printed list attached.) I am not quite sure, I live in Federal Way. When I was younger living in Tukwila, it was safe, now I wouldn't ever live here. Tough area to have to work in. TIB always has been, even before the COT annexed this area. Thank you for taking the time to send these questionnaires. Although problems w /Tukwila PD in the past were myriad, I know great efforts are being made to improve things. I'm sure willing to let bygones be by- gones, provided the "new" PD keeps up the good work. I live in Tukwila for the past 15 years at same address. I experience only 1 car prowl and 1 break in attempt in my house. I like Tukwila in my neighborhood area it is quiet and peaceful. But we need more frequent police rounding. After the police raided the hotels on Pac Highway the community has felt much safer. Not safe for walking, biking because there is no sidewalk. I fear for students walking to and from school. 45th & 139th. A homeless person lived under the bridge of 405 /Green River. Long time. (now). A lot of people set fire for barbeque on the patio /balcony (Canyon Estate Condo). A lot of people repair the car along the street. I see officers occasionally - but it is always in response to a 911 call. (This is on my street.) Out and about - they are everywhere. I really only know one officer and he is a relative. Officer Goines, Officer Rutt. Best cops in town! Thank you!!! I've lived here since 8/05. No big crimes. Some thieving /breaking several years ago. 6 PERCEPTION OF SAFETY Comments (page 3 of 3) I'm really thankful that I see police passing through the neighborhood. I missed the last event that police officers and fire dept personnel were present. We'd love to thank our officers - we think about dropping off cookies or other treats. Home broken into 2x last year. Very poor follow up from police dept. Safe walking during day only I wish I could be more positive about safety in Tukwila, but in my 20 years of living here I have only seen things go downhill. I do want to say though that I am very happy to see the motels on Intl Blvd CLOSED DOWN! I would love to see City Hall move to this location. The main thing here where I live the traffic has picked up and people seem to speed on this street, especially at shift change and it will be especially dangerous when school starts. I think when you live in an area where there's high unemployment and uneducated (no offense) you see more crimes - it's survival of the fittest. I just moved here. Two police events on my property since I arrived. 1. A strange man knocking on my win- dows at 5 a.m. -ish (reported to police). 2. Apparently there were people hiding under my deck one night. I woke up to many police officers retrieving the guys. Live in Laurel Estates. All of the problems in the area seem to be in the community behind us to the east. I called for help once, police never showed up and another time I spoke to one of your officers regarding help. She said I will be back I am still waiting. I don't like it when people ask me where I live. I state Tukwila and repeatedly they tell me it's one of the worst places to live. It's bad when you hear that over and over again. I pay high taxes around here, it should be better. (only changes made were to spelling) LEVELS OF CONCERN In the area where you spend most of your time, how much of a problem are these issues? As a gay couple it is tough to gauge these issues unbiased. Concern with vacant homes that squatters use as their place to live, bring in unwanted people into our com- munity. We have 2 incidents of theft (1 garage, 1 car) in the 2 years we've lived here. As for personal safety, I feel safe. Traffic and parking issues in Foster Point corner of 56th AV S and 133rd AV. Excessive speeding - blind spots. All of the above is just my personal experience. Need to help others and clean yards and pull cars out of the way; put people to help others to clean clean help help Some of these are interconnected. Domestic disputes that turn into fights. More bright street lights in dark spots on S 158th ST would be helpful to discourage illegal activities. Noted DV at Crystal Ridge 15335 Bldg 301 I call 911 quite often when I see something wrong in the neighborhood! We have a great street where we all know each other and watch out for each other. When I had my Honda Accord, it was stolen from my driveway 3 times and once found in SFO. I feel that wouldn't happen now. Turning left from S Boeing Access Rd onto E Marginal Way. Numerous times a week people wrongly enter the lanes of oncoming traffic on Tukwila Intl Blvd. It's dangerous, and confusing. My top concerns are property, drug activity, and safety /welfare. We have a lot of immigrants who, for whatever reason, do not feel like they can go to the police so will allow things to go on in the community even if they do not like it, or agree with the activity. Prostitution driven off the highway into residential community. Speeding, distracted drivers (phones), jay- walking on highway. Road rage, traffic congestion, need more stop lights on highway. Trespassing /loitering /hang out, 7 -11 and other gas stations on Hwy 99. Strong block watch program helps us feel safer and more aware of issues. People that hang out to beg need to go away. There's a bad culture on Pac Highway. 11 LEVELS OF CONCERN Comments (page 2 of 3) Our car has been burgled several times over the years. Only when doors were accidentally left unlocked. Is- sues with prostitution from the highway seems to have improved. Lots of speeding w /cars and lots of motorcycles burning rubber all over the street, very loud, music, roaring engines. Making u -turns in my driveway. Stealing and hitting my mailboxes. I can't go to my local corner stores no more I have to drive away from where I live to go to stores, I'm scared I'll get robbed or jumped by teenagers. Three known marijuana grow houses in 1 1/2 blocks. Drug sales /use in others. Neighbor called 911 about prowler. No response from TPD. Police officers spread too thin. Tukwila is perceived by those outside of this community to be a dangerous crime ridden place. Street people. I see people drink, do drugs, loiter all the time. They hang out at bus stops, by the KFC, sit on the walls by the Riverton Deli. I feel sorry for the business owners in those areas. Another problem is the semi trucks that park on the streets to visit their mosque or their ethnic stores. I live next to Foster High School and I saw students fighting only at end of school year. Haven't heard any crime or violence in my neighborhood area. One time they left stolen car in front of my house this year. Sometimes I hear guns going off, but maybe it is firecrackers. I also see mail being pilfered and laying on the ground. If I see it for myself I call my neighborhood representative who is Denny Dunn. We are unsure about police activity - is there a neighborhood blotter? We mostly see impatient drivers mak- ing poor driving decisions - especially with so much pedestrian traffic. Drivers don't yield to pedestrians in marked crosswalks. Young people walking up and down the street late at night. I find it sad that Tukwila having a small town feel doesn't have more community involvement. It appears the older population is moving out and new residents just don't care about community. I have been live in the 2636S for about 3 months. Traffic problems, drinking and driving 12 LEVELS OF CONCERN Comments (page 3 of 3) I moved here in 2012 August, and I worked every day - since then I've had two bicycles stolen, I've heard a woman sexually assaulted on 24th Ave. I find the area where there are steps going down to the park and ride light rail station from Southcenter Blvd very scary. Also there should be a crosswalk there, people cross constantly and traffic is affected. As neighborhoods go, ours is a relatively nice neighborhood. However, on this hill over the years there have been quite a few home break -ins during the day. Again it is the area behind Laurel Estates that concerns me. 13 INTERACTIONS WITH TUKWILA POLICE DEPARTMENT Amount of contact with Tukwila Police Manner of contact Department in the last two years 126 responses 6 blank • None ®1 -3 tines 4-6 tines o 7-10 tines • 10+ times If you called 911, how long did it take for po- lice to respond? 75 responses 57 blank 0 Less than5 minutes o Between 5-15 minutes Between 16-30 minutes o Between 31-50 minutes • Morethan 1 hour • Other Other: way too long period; no call; No response with drug deals on my street and my driveway; no response; no response; depends on which inci- dent 123 responses 9 blank pInperson p Over the phone D Walk-in complaint u By email • Other Other: volunteer at NRC, community events, talk, death If you called about a non - emergency police issue, how long did it take for police to re- spond? la Less tha n 5 minutes El Between 5-15 minutes 0 Between 15-30 minutes Between 31-560 m inutes •Morethan 1hour El Other 66 responses 66 blank Other: don't bother to call; no call; depends on which incident 14 INTERACTIONS WITH TUKWILA POLICE DEPARTMENT Circumstance of contact(s) Made 911 phone call 49 Made non - emergency phone call 44 Did not make call 2 Flagged down an officer 13 Traffic stop /enforcement 0 Traffic accident 7 Parking ticket 0 Disabled vehicle 1 Made report 22 Complainant 15 DARE program 5 PD crime prevention program 5 Community event 44 Casual encounter with employee 15 Registered a firearm 2 Got fingerprinted 1 Made records request 4 Crime witness 11 Crime suspect 0 Crime victim in Tukwila 12 Arrested for crime 1 Spoke with detective 6 Observed from distance 18 No contact 7 Prefer not to answer 0 Other 12 Have you been a victim of crime (any type) in Tukwila within the past two years? 115 responses 17 blank Did you contact the Tukwila Police Depart- ment regarding the crime? 65 responses 67 blank 15 INTERACTIONS WITH TUKWILA POLICE DEPARTMENT Your experience with police employee contacted Showed concern for my welfare Showed compassion Helped resolve my situation 34% Paid attention to details /tip. ., c Expressed interest in helping Understood my needs Made me feel comfortable 1Ch Treated me with respect 17% 22% 24% Was courteous/professional 16 INTERACTIONS WITH TUKWILA POLICE DEPARTMENT Overall, how satisfied are you with the service you received from Tukwila Police Department? 101 responses 31 blank ® Very satisfied pSatisfied Somewhat satisfied CI Not satis-ned 17 INTERACTIONS WITH TUKWILA POLICE DEPARTMENT Comments (page 1 of 2) Your officers do a terrific job! 2 crimes - contacted for garage burglary, did not contact for car break in (only stole diaper bag). I live in Allentown. It is a quiet neighborhood. Tukwila has ebbs and flows of issues. Good economy better times here. Shooting at SC Mall bothersome, dis- turbing. I'm always surprised and pleased to see them on my street. We had our car hit and run and the officer on the scene was not very helpful in catching the person who hit our vehicle. We had to investigate ourselves. I am grateful for the men and women of TPD. Sometimes the response is slow to non - emergency calls but I know that if I had an emergency they would be there very quickly. Police contacted us about our mail being stolen at Christmas. Took about three months to return our mail. Our officers are very responsive, positive and helpful! NA - but I like the police in general They can only do what they have the evidence tells them. They do a good job. People from the highway frequently mistakenly end up at our dead end street believing it goes all the way to Southcenter. Increased signage would help. Robbed at gunpoint in home w /children (in 1980s) Gratefully I have not called or been in contact with the police department but just been around the crime. They laughed at my hit and run and were dismissive and rude. satisfaction dependent on interaction We (my wife & I) witnessed a vehicle break -in, called 911, and watched the police arrive within minutes. Officer used to live in neighborhood Tukwila's police department is better than most cities. The theft was: trailer batteries stolen - didn't call because there is nothing to be done. 18 INTERACTIONS WITH TUKWILA POLICE DEPARTMENT Comments (page 2 of 2) I've enjoyed the convenience of living at the Terrace and it's accessibility to shopping. Thank you for this survey. Thank you for your service! 1 locked up in grocery store at 3 p.m. couldn't get out On a positive note, I am happy to see the bicycle cops return to the highway. Would love to see this on a daily basis. I have not called 911 since living at this home. The police have always responded, we felt, when we've called over the years that we've lived here. I have never reported any burglaries at my house - I don't think it's priority - I have been burglarized in differ- ent areas (house) and reported, but nothing happened - so be it - there's more priority crimes. I want to feel safe but for some reason I don't at night. I plan to install fencing. I hope that helps ease my fear. My answers on this page reflect that I live and work within two blocks. The crime referred to was a stolen rid- ing lawn mower from work. The reason for the 'poor' rating above is simply because the case was never solved. But we knew that it was probably a lost cause and the police we dealt with were very professional. Use of police sirens between 10:00 pm and 6:00 am should be limited to actual need as much as possible. 19 DEMOGRAPHICS Years living in Tukwila Rent or own 45% 103 responses 29 blank Residence 19% • Less tha n 1 year IS 1-3 years 1;14-5 years 07-10 years • 11-20 yea 1-5, • 20+ years • House 0 Apartm en Ep Condo El Manufach housing 98 responses 34 blank Other: homeless (1) 20% 100 responses 32 blank Number of people in household 93 responses 39 blank 20 DEMOGRAPHICS Age group 127 responses 5 blank My Tukwila connection 157 responses (multiples allowed) Other: therapy, driver, CBSR, Seatac ▪ Under 18 p 18-25 1226-33 ❑ 34-41 • 42-49 • 50-57 • 58-65 • 66-73 • 74 and over • Prefer not to a riswer ■ 'five in Tukwila ® Work in Tukwila 61 Tukwila buns owner o Frequent visitor • Student • Other Gender 118 responses 14 blank Community diversity: your ethnicity 134 responses pF Morethan one response ® Asian ® 6lack /African- American ® Hispanic o Nature Am.eri can /Alaskan native • Pacific Islander • WhitejCaucastan ■ Multiple races • other ■ Prefer not to answer Other: English /Irish /German, all above, Caribbean, Ethiopian Country of origin: Fiji, USA (22), El Salvador, Eritrea, Philippines, England, 21 DEMOGRAPHICS Neighborhood you consider yourself to be "part of" Allentown 4 Bremmer's Hill 5 Cascade View 5 Crestview 3 Duwamish Curve 6 Foster Point 4 McMicken Heights 7 Riverton Heights 6 Ryan Hill 3 Southcenter Business District 8 Thorndyke 12 Tukwila Hill 18 Tukwila International Boulevard area 18 Other 20 Unsure?
