This month, the City of Tukwila will welcome a team of national urban design experts to lead public
design workshops in partnership with local leaders and advocates. The workshop will focus on the
Tukwila International Boulevard, and are scheduled to take place February 23 -25.
Co- hosted by the national nonprofit Congress for the New Urbanism, (CNU), the City of Tukwila and King
County Green Tools, these interactive design workshops will invite residents and local stakeholders to
share their vision for future growth and help develop neighborhood plans and design guidelines. Tukwila
was chosen through a competitive process based on its need, community support, and readiness to
implement.
During the City of Tukwila workshop, city and county officials, local residents, and community
stakeholders will partner with national firm PlaceMakers to kick off implementation for the Tukwila
International Boulevard neighborhood, based on the community's adopted vision and goals. Tukwila
residents, businesses, property owners and other stakeholders are invited to help ground the
conversation on the needs of the community and provide feedback on possible strategies for
implementation.
In CNU's intensive three -day design workshop process, municipal leaders, local stakeholders, and
residents to work side -by -side with urban designers every step of the way. Support for the projects will
be provided by partners including Gibbs Planning Group, Mouzon Design, Andrews University, Crabtree
Group, Fuller Sears Architects, and Zimmerman /Volk Associates.
At the end of the workshop, project representatives will discuss how the community's visions and goals
will translate into recommendations, goals, and results moving forward.
The workshop is planned as part of CNU 25 Seattle, the national placemaking conference coming May 3-
6, 2017 in Seattle. Each year, CNU supports such legacy projects to ensure that the conference leaves a
positive impact on the local community.
