ANNOUNCEMENT II. BUSINESSAGENDA A. Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Following up to a briefing given at the February 21, 2017 Committee meeting, staff is seeking Committee approval to purchase equipment for an Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) pilot program in the amount of $39,000. PD would like to pilot the use of UAS to enhance search and rescue, reconstruct crime scenes, respond to incidents, improve situational awareness and safety, and assess damage during disaster response. The PD policy addresses definitions, procedures, restrictions, reporting, recording, and privacy. The Committee asked clarifying questions and due to time restrictions requested that the item return for further discussion. Committee members asked clarifying questions and stressed the importance of public engagement and outreach. The Committee also requested that it be made explicit that the department policy reflects best practices as recommended bytheACLU, Washington State, and others. Staff agreed to add language to this effect. If approved, information about the pilot program, including the department policy and references, will be made available on the City's website. UNANIMOUS COMMITTEE APPROVAL. B. 20164' Ouarter Police Department Report Chief Villa updated the Committee on items of interest from the 4t" quarter of 2016, including staffing, recognitions, community outreach, significant operations, and events.
