Please let me know if you have any questions or need additional information about any of the following items. 1. Intergovernmental Update • Economic Development Council of Seattle/King County Annual Meeting: On February 28 Councilmember Hougardy and Economic Development staff attended the annual investors meeting of the Economic Development Council of Seattle/King County and heard presentations on community colleges. • Regional Transportation System Initiative Meeting.- Public Works Director Bob Giberson attended the Regional Transportation System Initiative kickoff meeting on March 3. The technical committee is charged with identifying capital needs for the regional transportation network. • Meeting with International Delegates: On March 8 Mayor Ekberg, Evie Boykan, Deputy Chief Mitchell, Sergeant Boyd and Officer Valdez met with a delegation from the World Affairs Council International Visitor Leadership Program at the Tukwila Community Center. In attendance were representatives from several police agencies from countries throughout the world. The Tukwila Police staff gave a presentation on outreach programs within the community, particularly policing strategies to serve our diverse refugee and immigrant population. 111. Community Events • Women's Leadership Conference: On March 1 Mayor Ekberg offered welcoming remarks to the attendees of the Women's Leadership conference held at the University of Phoenix campus in Tukwila. Councilmember Hougardy was one of the presenters at the Conference. He also presented a proclamation to the group declaring March Women's History Month in Tukwila. • Dr. Seuss Night: The annual Dr. Seuss event was held on March 2 at the Tukwila Community Center. Mayor Ekberg was on hand to enjoy the event with over 300 kids who attended. Everyone received a free book, played games in the gym, enjoyed dinner and celebrated the Cat and the Hat's birthday. Ill. IV. Staff Updates Public Safety • Presentation to the Park Commission: On March 8 Sgt. Boyd and Officer Valdez attended the Park Commission meeting and discussed the challenges the Police Department faces in the parks. • Panel Presentation at Seattle University School of Law: Chief Villa participated in a panel presentation at The Defender Initiative 7th Annual Conference on Public Defense on March 3 at Seattle University School of Law. He was invited to speak about efforts being made to reduce the disproportionality of youth of color in the criminal justice system. The King County Juvenile Public Defender's Officer, Prosecutor's Officer, Tukwila PD, non-governmental community outreach providers and Westfield Mail have collaborated to pilot a theft-3 pre-filing diversion program where youth arrested for misdemeanor shoplift would have the opportunity to meet with outreach workers, complete the program and have criminal charges divert. • Commendation from United States Postal Inspection Services: Detective Josh Vivet was given a commendation from the United States Postal Inspection Services for investigating a crime that led to the arrest of ten offenders. The NW Regional Postal Inspector In Charge presented the award and emphasized the importance of partnerships, which is absolutely necessary to get results such as this. Protect Updates • Neighborhood Tours: On March 8 Economic Development Administrator Derek Speck gave a tour of Tukwila's neighborhoods to representatives from Habitat for Humanity as part of exploration of Habitat conducting a home repair program for low-income homeowners. • Southcenter Pedestrian/Bicycle Bridge: On the west side of Green River the contractor continues to form the deck for Span 1, fix the edge of the deck, and build rebar to the structure. Away from the project site, welding and fabrication of the steel bridge continues. In the near future, the top chord of the Span 2 bridge structure should be available for site inspection. • Andover Park E Water/Sewer: Contractor has completed the new sewer line installation and repaired the damage found during final inspection. The remaining old sewer lines have been rehabilitated with a cast-in-place liner. The new water line from Strander Blvd north along the east side of the roadway is proceeding north and has just passed Baker Blvd. • S 144th St Phase II: Notice of bid award was issued to Marshbank Construction. A pre- construction meeting with the contractor will outline the construction schedule to include the temporary closure of South 144th and the approximate opening of the new traffic signal at 42nd Avenue S. • Boeing Access Road Bridge Rehabilitation: Bid opening date is March 15.
