HomeMy WebLinkAbout2017-04-30 - Curb Speeding Pilot Program - South 160th Street (42nd Avenue South and 51st Avenue South)LET US KNOW YOUR THOUGHTS ON A NEW PILOT PROGRAM
TO CURB SPEEDING IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD
WHAT'S NEXT?
Neighbor complaints and a RADAR
study indicate excessive speeding
on South 160th Street. Because of
the upcoming closure of 42nd Ave.
South due to road work, it is likely
that South 160th will see additional
traffic and ongoing speed issues.
The City of Tukwila will test a pilot
program installing speed cushions
on South 160th to see if they
reduce speeding. The City has
been and will continue to monitor
speeds on South 160th, during the
pilot program and afterwards, to
determine the success of speed
cushions in our community.
If successful, the City may install speed
cushions at additional locations in
other residential neighborhoods
that are determined to have
excessive speeding problems.
WHAT ARE SPEED CUSHIONS?
Speed cushions are either speed
humps or speed tables that include
wheel cutouts to allow large vehicles
to pass unaffected, while
reducing passenger car speeds.
They can be offset to allow
unimpeded passage by emergency
vehicles and are typically used
on key emergency response routes.
Public Works staff marked six spots
on South 160th Street between
42nd Ave South and 51st Ave. South
where the initial speed cushions
will be installed.
Installation will begin this spring. It is
anticipated the speed cushions will
stay in place for up to a year.
