HomeMy WebLinkAboutHSAB 2017-03-24 MinutesCity of Tukwila Human Services Advisory Board Friday, March 24, 2017 Human Services Conference Room 6300 Southcenter Blvd., suite 115 11 am —12:30 pm AGENDA Attendees: Borka Paponjak, Jan Bolerjack, Jonathan Joseph, Terra Straight, Coletha Albert; absent: Jonathan Houston, Charis Hnin; staff: Cheryl Thompson, Evie Boykan, Stacy Hansen 1. New HSAB meetinq format training Cheryl Thompson, Executive Assistant — 20 min. Ms. Thompson shared potential changes that may occur once Council approves new ordinance on Boards and Commissions. Changes include electing a chair and vice chair, agenda setting based on work plan, call the meeting to order, call for official votes, adjourning the meeting, all terms will end in December, all appointments will occur in January. If /when adopted, a resource template will be created, a new outreach /marketing plan to recruit new members, increase visibility, and an annual report on work that boards /commissions focused on during the year. OMPA (open meeting, public access) training will occur with each new member at the first meeting of their new term. 2. Discuss Chair position, date /time of meetings All —15 min Group discussed potential of changing date /time of future HSAB meetings. Monday afternoon was suggested - staff will contact absent board members to determine feasibility of date /time change. 2. 2017 Work Plan — Focus /Prioritize during next meeting Homelessness Service accessibility Housing Security Refugees /immigration Human Services infrastructure Community identity 4. YTD I &R stats All — 20 min New provider presentations /visits Growing partnerships Stacy —10 min Shared ytd data; upcoming events: KCHA opens its Section 8 lottery for registration from 4 -5 -17 to 4 -18 -17 (on- line), Rebuilding Together Seattle will be working on 3 Tukwila Homes at the end of April. Potential for a resource fair this Fall sponsored by KC Worksource and a variety of City and non- profit partners. 5. Member sharinq All —15 min Ms. Paponjak shared that although resettlement cases were cancelled at the end of January, some were rescheduled (family, asylee's) Afghani and Iraqi working for the US and Army are still on target to arrive. 436 refugees were resettled by the IRC in less than 6 months - nothing scheduled for the next two months. Typically, nationwide 100,000 individuals are resettled annually, however this has been cut in half. Mr. Joseph shared that UofW will be hosting an event on Equity and Social Justice thru the MUP (Master of Urban Planning) on Thursday, March 30th starting at 5:30 at Gould Court. Currently an intern for the city in DCD, he shared the message of using an equity lens on all city work. Rev. Bolerjack shared that Homestead is interested in purchasing a smaller piece of church property- several new partners want to engage (Habitat for Humanity, Compassionate Communities). Focus being initial bunk -style housing (continuing the mission of housing the homeless) - graduation to a tiny house -then a rental house to build a rental history and move toward stability /independence. By July all of the current tenants will have moved from the RPUMC campus so that the new phase can begin. RPUMC's missions is Tukwila is a City of God, with a vision /focus on wholeness of individual with access to food, shelter, medical care, dignity, security. Ms. Straight shared that the future may include living on Vashon in a yurt in the future. Ms. Albert shared that her foundation, The Joseph Duane Albert Foundation, is now a 501 c3 -her passion is public speaking to mother's who have lost their children to homicide.
