HomeMy WebLinkAboutEquityDiversity 2017-03-02 MinutesEQUITY AND DIVERSITY COMMISION MEETING MINUTES March 2, 2017 Present: Kathy Hougardy, Dat Tran, Joan Hernandez Absent: Aaron Dragonov, Dr. Nancy Coogan Staff: Rachel Bianchi, Mia Navarro Guests: None Meeting was called to order at 5:19 p.m. OLD BUSINESS Joan Hernandez made a motion to approve the January and February 2017 meeting minutes. Dat seconded. The motion passed unanimously. NEW BUSINESS a. New appointments. We are still looking for new members. Staff will do more social media posts, and put the recruitment in the Reporter and the Hazelnut. Staff will also include the recruitment in the News and Headlines section on the website, and email the link to Commission members. Staff will continue reaching out to students as well. b. Municipal Code Update. The new schedule for code update is as follows: • Community Development and Neighborhood Committee March 6 • Council of the Whole March 27 • Regular Council Meeting April 3 c. Quorum Discussion. The municipal code states and the group agreed that a quorum shall equal a majority of seated Commission members. Since there are five seated members, a quorum shall equal 3 members. d. Commissioner Job Description. Staff presented a draft job description to aid in recruitment for the Commission. The group approved it, with the exception that it should be changed to reflect a 2 -year term limit. Page 1 of 2 e. Cultural Events in Tukwila. Staff talked about how they will stay on top of cultural events in Tukwila by monitoring the school district calendar, and various social media outlets. f. Miscellaneous. Per the request of the Commission, staff purchased two copies of the book, Tears We Cannot Stop: a Sermon to White America, for Commissioners to borrow. Both copies were borrowed at the meeting. Commission members asked about the status of the Sister City Commission. Under the proposed municipal code change, the Sister City Commission will become a subcommittee of the Equity and Diversity Commission, and renamed the Sister City and Civic Engagement. Tracy Gallaway has contacted all former Sister City Commissioners, and informed them of the change. Councilmember Hougardy indicated that a proposed use of the budget from the Sister City and Civic Engagement subcommittee could be to send students to the National League of Cities annual conference in Washington DC on a regular basis. We would have to take into account logistics, chaperones, etc. Next meeting the Commission will receive an update on the Equity Policy that is being developed by a group of interested staff members.
