ISSUE The Arts Commission, Equity and Social Justice Commission and Park Commission currently have vacancies. I am recommending appointments as follows. A copy of the application for each applicant is attached. Arts Commission Position #3: This position is currently vacant. I am recommending the appointment of Daniel Humkey. Daniel previously served as the student representative on the Arts Commission until his graduation from Foster High School. He is now attending the University of Washington and would like to continue to work with the Arts Commission. The term for this position expires December 31, 2020. Student Representative: This position is currently vacant. I am recommending the appointment of Yuriko Rollins, a student at Foster High School. Yuriko is involved in visual and performing arts and will be a valuable addition to the Arts Commission. The term for this position expires June 30, 2019. Equity and Social Justice Commission Position #2: This position is an education field position and is currently vacant. Per TMC 2.29.020 (B)(3) one of the education positions may be filled with a community representative. As we currently have two positions representing the Tukwila School District and we received six applications for vacant positions, none of whom were in the education field, I am recommending the appointment of Jonathon Joseph to this position as a community representative. Jonathon resides in Tukwila, works as an intern in the Department of Community Development and will make a valuable addition to the Equity and Social Justice Commission. The term for this position expires December 31, 2017. Position #4: This position is a City employee position and is currently vacant. I am recommending the appointment of Nora Gierloff. Nora is the Deputy Director of the Department of Community Development and her knowledge on housing issues will be beneficial to the Commission. The term for this position expires on December 31, 2018. Position #6: This position is a community position and is currently vacant. I am recommending the appointment of Karl Henry. Karl is a self-employed business owner in the City of Tukwila and is very excited to serve on the Equity and Social Justice Commission. The term for this position expires on December 31, 2018. Position #7: This position is a City employee position and is currently vacant. I am recommending the appointment of Roy Busch. Roy has worked in the Sewer and Surface Water Division of the Public Works Department for nine years and is interested in becoming more involved in Equity within the City. The term for this position expires on December 31, 2017. I served my class senior year as vice president, working on class meetings, dance planning, and senior shirts, among other items. I volunteered at the St. Thomas food bank from to 2011 to 2017, helping repackage food and create monthly nutritional bags. Hobbies/Interests: I am a visual, graphic, and performing artist. I work with a variety of traditional mediums, including acrylic paint, watercolor, and chalk pastel, along with my preferred medium of colored pencils. I am completing a dual Masters program and will graduate with both a Masters in Urban Planning and a Masters in Public Health, with an emphasis on community oriented public health and policy. I currently serve on the human services advisory board for the city of Tukwila. I volunteer with the Tukwila food pantry and a local grassroots community organization called Action Tukwila. Regionally I also serve on the board of sound discipline, a local non-profit that works with schools in creating better learning environments for all students. My passion has been in community development and I try to devote a portion of my time to helping this cause. Professionally my background is in retail and banking. I ran multiple retail locations, which included managing labor and sales trends. Attached is a copy of my resume for further information. Hobbies/Interests: I have varied hobbies and interest... although to be honest, being in school has made enjoying some of the hobbies a little more difficult. I like traveling, photography, swimming, reading, watching TV and movies, hanging out with friends and family. I have started to explore drawing and doodling and really find it a great way to relax. My passion has always been community development so a significant portion of my time is spent volunteering. Qualifications as related to this position: I believe my previous work as well as my current studies make me a good fit for this commission. Recent studies show that the majority of the human population live in cities. Its become apparent that the inequities present in many of our communities are a symptom of planning policies that continue to propagate a system that disenfranchises many individuals. I think we have done a good job of recognizing this problem as a city,however, now we must look for solutions to dismantle said system. I believe my knowledge in urban planning and public health would be value added to the group. The other Commissioners shared my concern that all the residents of Tukwila --not just members of this or that special interest or sports group --should get full benefit from our fine parks system, and that we should improve and sustain it for posterity. I belong to the Northwest Scale Modelers, which provides the Museum of Flight with educational displays and material. I contribute to every quarterly special display to interest and educate guests about important aviation -related history. I produced two recently, about WW2's `Battle of the Atlantic', and `MiG Dynasty', explaining Russian airpower from 1941 to the present day. I've been with local church St. Thomas Parish since I moved here in 1988, supporting it financially, with my computer expertise, and in seasonal drives for clothing and toys for less privileged members. I also support Catholic Community Services, whose many programs serve Tukwila residents, as well as others in the greater Seattle area. Hobbies / Interests. - Besides my work as computer consultant and instructor, I pursue various computer-related functions and applications as a hobby. I ride bicycles for recreation. As noted above, I build model airplanes (both tabletop `static display' and flying models), spacecraft, and other vehicles, and tie these builds in with study of the history of technology. Qualifications as related to this position: [UbraryAdvisory Board] As noted in the first section, I've served on the Parks Commission. My work career required working on a wide variety of tasks with a wide variety of people: from customers at bike shops, students at two community colleges, and a wide variety of computer users, from novices to technological sophisticates, including medical providers and company owners and managers. I established good working rapport with all, and with other Commissioners at our meetings. I feel I can always work with others and serve the City of Tukwila and its citizens. Increasingly, the library system and its resources are computerized and tied into the Internet. My Information Technology experience and expertise would be useful to the Board and library users, such as understanding how to find, draw in, and use data from a multitude of sources. During the last two years, especially, I've been heavily dependent on library resources and learned a lot about the system's capabilities, a few of its weaknesses, and its enormous potential to help all its users. Other comments / additional information for consideration; Politically, I owe no economic entity or pressure group nor have excessive devotion to any political party or philosophy. Ideologically, I stick close to the middle-of-the-road. Economically, I'm neither wealthy nor poor, having had income near the median, and now being near -retired. I understand and identify with the economic challenges that nearly all Tukwila's citizens face in trying to live the good life. Intellectually, I have always sought to broaden my knowledge and expertise, and in all my work, while I've never known all the answers, I've been able to find them.
