Please let me know if you have any questions or need additional information about any of the following items. I. Intergovernmental Update • Prep for Regional Transit Committee Meeting: Department of Community Development staff attended the August 30 meeting with King County Metro to plan the agenda for the September Regional Transit Committee Meeting. The September meeting will include a briefing on Metro's proposed fare legislation, and a status report on the Community Connections (formerly Alternative Services) program. • RISE Presentation at the Sound Cities Association Dinner: The City of Tukwila was selected to provide a "RISE" presentation at the September 6 Sound Cities Association Dinner. "RISE" presentations are meant to "Recognize, Inspire, Share, Engage!" Christy O'Flaherty, Records Governance Manager/City Clerk gave a presentation on the GET - IT project that has made 1.2+ million land use and development permit images available online in the City's Digital Records Center. Mayor Ekberg and Councilmembers Duffie and Kruller attended the SCA event. • Regional Affordable Housing Staff Work Group: Community Development Director Jack Pace is a member of the Regional Affordable Housing Staff Work Group. The Work Group recently met to review a draft Charter and Work Plan. The Work Group provides support to the Regional Affordable Housing Task Force as they work to develop a recommended countywide affordable housing strategy. • 2017 King County Executive's Small Business Awards Finalists: On September 12th King County announced the finalists for the 2017 King County Executive's Small Business Awards. Three Tukwila business are finalists: Odin Brewery is a finalist for Overall Best Small Business; Industrial Rev is a finalist for Best Exporting Small Business; and Pacific Rim Environmental is a finalist for Best Green/Sustainable Small Business. The winners will be announced on September 21. II. Community Events • S2 Family Night: On September 9 the City sponsored Family Night at the S2 game. As part of the event the city worked with the Sounders to bring in bouncy houses, face painting and a City of Tukwila fire truck. Summer playground staff served 80 to 100 kids each day at the park. The Playground Program is a Free Summer Sack Lunch Program site through the Seattle Human Services Department's Summer Food Service Program where everyday each kid received a healthy sensible lunch. • The United Way Day of Caring: The United Way Day of Caring was September 15 at Tukwila Park. Volunteers from local businesses focused on ivy removal around the park. • Teen After School Program: The free Teen After School Program has begun for the school year. The Teen Room at TCC is open Monday -Friday from 3:00 PM - 6:00 PM. Drop in activities include ping pong, pool, homework time, arts, crafts, snacks and more. • Preschool Classes: The three and four-year-old preschool classes are full for the 2017-2018 school year. The transitional kindergarten class has six students, and additional registrations are coming in daily as the school year gets started. III. Staff Updates Public Safety • Partnership with Youth Linc: The Community Police Team continues the work with Youth Linc. Youth Linc is a program in which police and counselors work with juveniles who routinely find themselves in trouble with the law. They provide focus, mentoring, and outreach to them. • Child Endangerment Task Force: The Anti -Crime Team has been involved with the Child Endangerment Task Force (CETF) and participated in an operation with local agencies focused on identifying and recovering juvenile females who may be part of the human trafficking trade. Project Updates • Southcenter Pedestrian/Bicycle Bridge: Contractor poured light weight concrete on the deck of the main steel bridge structure last week. On west side of Green River, the contractor has been sawcutting and paving asphalt for the trail. On east side of Green River, the contractor has been building the forms for Spans 3 and 4, and will install rebar and pour concrete soon after. The estimated completion date for this project is December 2017. • BAR Bridge Rehab: The BNSF permit is in the final stages for approval. The work under the bridge to stabilize the footings should be completed by Thanksgiving. • Major Maintenance on 3 Bridges: Work on all three project sites began on July 24 and all work is expected to be complete by December 2017. • Beacon Ave Bridge: Completely closed to traffic beginning August 28 with completion by October. Frank Zepp Bridge: Completely closed to traffic for 10 days beginning September 15. Grady Way Bridge: No major impacts to Grady Way with only temporary lane closures on Longacres Drive. A structural shoring retaining wall will be required to protect existing structures prior to excavating the west side of the streambed for placement of the culvert. We expect to have a driller on site in the next week to complete this work. This project is scheduled to be complete in August 2018, barring any setbacks. • S 144th St Phase II: Contractor is continuously grading the north side of the road and pouring concrete sidewalk on the south side of the road. Streetlight pole bases were poured with concrete. The traffic signal work at the intersection of S 144th St and 42nd Ave S will soon begin. This section of S 144th St has also been re -opened for westbound traffic only. Work should be complete by November 2017. • Cascade View SRTS Phase II: Construction continues with the installation of concrete sidewalks and the roundabout at S 140th St and 33rd Ave S. All work should be completed by the end of October. • 2016 Andover Park East Sewer Repair: This project was substantially completed as of August 31, 2017. The Contractor is completing the remaining punch list items. • Baker Blvd Non -Motorized: Survey and potholing is complete. Clearing and grubbing is underway on Christensen Rd in preparation for the installation of additional storm drainage, illumination, and new widened sidewalks. Preparations for upgraded ADA ramps at Baker and Andover Park East began September 11. All work should be complete by December 2017. • S 119th St Pedestrian Bridge: Repairs of the girder tops began on September 5. The girder tops repair and test deck repair section are expected to be completed by the end of September. • 2017 Overlay & Repair: Contractor has begun installing curb ramps at S 128th St and paving the north approach area of the 42nd Ave S bridge near TCC. Work is expected to be completed by the end of October. • 2017 Annual Small Drainage Program: On Strander Blvd, between Tukwila Pkwy and Andover Park West, the contractor has installed an 8 -inch drain line behind the curb. The construction reduced one lane of eastbound traffic on Strander Blvd, but preserved pedestrian use of the sidewalk during this phase. On S 148th St, in the McMicken neighborhood, the contractor has excavated the trench for the drain line that will be installed on the east side of the street. All work is scheduled to be completed by the end of October. • Strander Boulevard/SW 27th St: Berger has been chosen as the designer and the design contract was presented to the Transportation & Infrastructure Committee on September 12 and is scheduled for the Consent Agenda on September 18. • Rental Housing Inspections: Department of Community Development staff is conducting rental housing inspections this throughout the month of September and all required inspections will be conducted by September 30. • Tree Replacement for Unauthorized Tree Removal: Boeing reported that their contractor started demolition at the Duwamish Oxbow site before the demo permit was issued. The contractor also removed a stand of 40 mature trees from the shoreline jurisdiction that were supposed to be protected and retained.
