ARTS COMMISSION
MINUTES
October 19, 2016 5:00 p.m. Tukwila Community Center
1.Call to Order: Chairperson Brian Kennedy called the meeting to order at 5:00 p.m.
2.Attendance: Commissioners - Brian Kennedy, Sheila Coppola, Steve Mullet, Cynthia Chesak, Trish
Gilmore, Daniel Humkey
Staff - Dave Johnson
Guests – Helen Enguerra, 4Culture Representatives Cath Brunner
3.Approval of Agenda: Steve Mullet moved to approve the agenda. Sheila Coppola seconded the motion.
Motion passed unanimously.
4.Introduction: New Fire Chief Jay Wittwer introduced himself to the Commission and fielded questions
from the Commissioners.
5.Approval of Minutes: Cynthia Chesak moved to approve the minutes of September 14 ,2016 meeting.
Trisha Gilmore seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.
6.Unfinished Business:
a.Arts Display Wall – Staff shared information and samples that are being considered for the Arts
Wall Display at the Community Center. Majority of the Commission agreed on the sunbaked
weathered wood option. Staff indicated that an order would be placed immediately.
7.New Business
a.Arts Plan Development – Commissioners shared their thoughts on the Arts Plans from other
communities. Cath Brunner from 4Culture also shared information and resources on developing a
citywide Community Arts Plan. Commissioners and 4Culture shared dialog and asked questions.
Cath Brunner will send some information to staff to follow up on for next steps in the process.
8.Committee Reports
A.Rainier Symphony – The Committee shared thoughts on how we can help advertise the Symphony,
including social media and the Tukwila Reporter)
B.Backyard Wildlife Art Show – Staff shared with the Committee the rules for the Renton Art Show. It
was also suggested that the Committee meet with staff after the first of the year to plan the 2017 show
in more detail.
C.Arts Promotion in Community – no report
D.Commissioner Reports – no report
9.Agenda for Next Meeting
A.Meet with Cath Brunner – this was moved up to this meeting.
B.Map of Tukwila
C.Sheila Coppola shared an idea of displaying art on the construction fence at Tukwila Village. Staff will
check into it.
10. Other
A.Helen Enguerra appointment to the Commission is scheduled for November 7, 2016.
B.Reminder about upcoming events:
a.Rainer Symphony performance
b.Washington Arts Commission Awards Dinner
