HomeMy WebLinkAboutArts 2017-06-17 Minutes ARTS COMMISSION MINUTES June 17, 2017 5:00 p.m. Tukwila Community Center 1.Call to Order: Vice Chair Cynthia Chesak called the meeting to order at 5:00 p.m. 2.Attendance: Commissioners – Cynthia Chesak, Steve Mullet, Sheila Coppola, Absent – Trish Gilmore, Helen Enguerra, Alex Villella, Brian Kennedy Guests – Yuri (Yuriko) Rollins, Jay Wittwer (Tukwila Fire Chief), Carolyn Law and Lesley Bain (MAP Consultants) Staff – Tracy Gallaway, Olena Perry 3.Approval of Agenda: Steve Mullet amended the agenda to include introductions. Sheila Coppola seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously. 4.Approval of Minutes: Steve Mullet moved to approve the minutes of June 21, 2017 meeting. Cynthia Chesak seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously. 5.Unfinished Business: a.KaBoom recap – Cynthia Chesak provided a brief update of the Build Day event that happened on Saturday, July 8, 2017 at Cascade View Community Park. Approximately 160 people assembled and installed the new playground. Several Councilmembers were in attendance. Arts Commissioners Cynthia Chesak, Steve Mullet and Alex Villella were active volunteers assisting with volunteer registration, construction and DJ services. b.Arts Plan Update – Tracy Gallaway introduced Carolyn Law and Lesley Bain, the consultants hired to lead the creation of the Municipal Arts Plan. The consultants gave an overview of their role in the development of the Master Arts Plan process. They shared some of the information from informational interviews with key staff and community members regarding art in Tukwila. These conversations will help them to develop the themes for the Municipal Arts Plan. c.Art Piece at City Hall Report – Tracy Gallaway will be meeting with Peggy McCarthy (Finance Director and City Risk Manager) to discuss insurance for City owned art acquisitions; she will follow up with more information at next meeting. 6.New Business a.Arts Commissioner application – Yuriko Rollins was reintroduced to the Commission. She will be officially appointed at an upcoming City Council meeting (in August or September). b.Tukwila Rocks! – Olena Perry was in attendance to talk to the commission about Tukwila Rocks!, an independent community group that is promoting art and kindness through painted rocks. She asked if the commission would be interested in hosting rock painting at the Tukwila Kids Fest event th scheduled for August 18 at Cascade Community Park. The commission didn’t feel that was something they would be interested in supporting at this time. 1 7.Committee Reports a.Rainier Symphony – No report. b.Backyard Wildlife Art Show – The purchasing of art from the show was discussed, but the commission agreed that it would be best not to add to our City art inventory until the Municipal Arts Plan was in place and could guide future purchases and develop a plan for display of the current art inventory. c.Arts Promotion in Community – No additional information. d.Commission Reports – Sheila Coppola asked if it would be possible to make changes to the Arts Commission page of the City website. Tracy Gallaway said she would speak with Stephanie Gardner about updating the page. 8.Other a.Sheila Coppola asked about the required ethics training for City Boards and Commission members. Tracy Gallaway said she would check into it and report back to the commission at the next meeting. 9.Agenda for Upcoming Meetings a.Arts Plan Update b.Budget Adjournment: At 6:35pm Steve Mullet moved to close the meeting.
