ARTS COMMISSION
MINUTES
July 12, 2016 3:00 p.m. Tukwila Community Center
Call to Order: Chairperson Brian Kennedy called the meeting to order at 3:04 p.m.
Attendance: Commissioners - Brian Kennedy, Sheila Coppola, Steve Mullet, Cynthia Chesak, Trish Gilmore,
Daniel Humkey
Staff - Dave Johnson, Trish Kinlow
Presentation: Trish Kinlow gave a presentation on the Public Safety Plan to the commission and answered
questions.
Approval of Minutes: Cynthia Chesak moved to approve the minutes of May 13, 2016 meeting. Trish Gilmore
seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.
Business Items
A.Rainier Symphony Report – Commission reviewed the report from Rainier Symphony that was in the
packet. The commission would like to continue to support the Rainier Symphony and offered suggestions
such as recruiting Tukwila residents to participate in the symphony, help distribute tickets to the schools,
assist with promotion, and figure out how to work better with them and connect with different cultures.
The Commission desires to form a sub-committee to work on this, and Steve Mullet and Cynthia Chesak
volunteered for it. This will be a standing agenda item with committee report outs.
B.Backyard Wildlife Art Show – Staff and Commissioners discussed the show and formed a sub-committee to
begin exploring a rules and guidelines for future shows. Brian Kennedy, Sheila Coppola, and Trish Gilmore
volunteered to serve on this committee. This will be a standing agenda item with committee report outs.
C.Budget Discussion – Staff shared with the budget status with the commission.
D.Municipal Arts Fund - Staff reviewed the draft policy with commission, and there were no further changes
or additions.
Other
A.Sheila Coppola shared information with the Commission about 2 upcoming events:

a.“Come Sit at our Table” community potluck on August 13
b.Youth/Teen workshop – Art Project Identity at Highline CC
B.The Commission also expressed a desire for further promotion of the Arts in the community, and formed a
committee that includes Daniel Humkey, Sheila Coppola, and Trish Gilmore. This will be a standing agenda
item with committee report outs.
