HomeMy WebLinkAboutArts 2017-01-18 Minutes ARTS COMMISSION MINUTES January 18, 2017 5:00 p.m. Tukwila Community Center 1.Call to Order: Chairperson Trisha Gilmore called the meeting to order at 5:00 p.m. 2.Attendance: Commissioners – Trisha Gilmore, Sheila Coppola, Steve Mullet, Cynthia Chesak, Helen Enguerra, Alex Villella, Daniel Humkey Staff - Dave Johnson Guests – Mia Navarro, Moira Bradshaw 3.Approval of Agenda: Steve Mullet moved to approve an amended agenda. Helen Enguerra seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously. 4.Introductions a.Mia Navarro – Mia is the City’s new Community Engagement Manager and she talked about some of the community outreach projects she is working on including the Public Safety Plan, TIB Comp Plan implementation, Tukwila Works, community connectors, and liaison role with the School District. Mia fielded questions from the Commissioners. b.Moira Bradshaw – Moira is a planner for the City and discussed the TIB Comp Plan implementation and upcoming planning workshops in February. Moira fielded questions from the Commissioners. c.Alex Villella – Alex introduced himself as the new Arts Commissioner and talked about his background and interest in the arts. 5.Approval of Minutes: Helen Enguerra moved to approve the minutes of November 16, 2016 meeting. Steve Mullet seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously. 6.Unfinished Business: a.Arts Display Wall – Staff reported that the wall is up and ready to go. Applications are available on the “Arts in Tukwila” webpage and also were distributed to the Commission. Trisha Gilmore and staff will review the applications as they come in and bring them forward for review. b.Arts Plan – Staff reported that they are working on developing a “Call for Planning Artists”. Once the Call is finished, it will go out and the selection process will begin, which will include interviews and contract. Staff hope to put the Call out in February. 7.New Business a.Proposed Ordinance Update – Staff reported on the information provided in the agenda packet regarding upcoming ordinance update. b.Art Piece at City Hall – Commission discussed the inspection of an art piece located at City Hall. The Commission agreed that they should inspect it before contracting with someone to come and do any cleaning, preservation of the piece. Sheila Coppola and Trisha Gilmore volunteered to look at it and report back. 8.Committee Reports a.Rainier Symphony – The Committee reported that the last 2 concerts have had a nice range of music, have a nice open atmosphere, and they appreciate the energy that the new director has. b.Backyard Wildlife Art Show – The Committee met and proposed a couple of options for the show. After discussion, it was decided to move forward with the show as it has in the past with the addition of a themed category related to nature c.Arts Promotion in Community – Committee reported that Daniel Humkey is preparing some informational material to help promote the Commission. d.Commissioner Reports – No report 9.Other a.Staff reminded the Commission about 2 upcoming events – Volunteer Appreciation on February 8, and the HERO Gala on February 25. Adjournment: The meeting was adjourned at 6:40 p.m.
