RE: 581 Strander Boulevard
Roofing Overlay

Dear Ron:

City of Tukwila
BUILDING DIVISION
Cascade Crest Consulting Engineers, Inc. performed a brief site visit to the building at 581 Strander
Boulevard in Tukwila, Washington, on August 13, 2013, to gather information for a proposed roofing
overlay to the building. Our site visit included observations and measurements of the existing roof
structure. This letter summarizes our observations and findings.
Existing Building Description
The existing building is a one-story concrete tilt -up structure. Based upon our observations, the
typical roof framing consists of 1-1/2" metal deck supported by 20" -deep open -web steel joists at 6'-
4" on -center, which are in turn supported by steel wide flange beams at 33'-6" on -center. Steel pipe
columns and the perimeter concrete wall panels support the roof framing system. The ground floor
consists of a concrete slab -on -grade. The foundation system likely consists of conventional concrete
spread footings with continuous strip footings at the perimeter walls and square pad footings at the
columns. The building was reportedly constructed in the 1960s.
Observations and Findings
The existing roofing system consists of a built-up roofing system which, according to Mr. Mark
Curry of Westcoast Roof Consulting in Costa Mesa, California, weighs approximately 3.55 pounds
per square foot (psf). According to Mr. Curry, the proposed roofing overlay system weighs
approximately 1.6 psf.
Utilizing the dead loads observed in the field, the above -noted roofing dead loads, and a code applied
live load of 25 psf, the roof framing system appears to have adequate capacity to support the
proposed roofing overlay system. Although the design Loads for the building are not known and
details of the framing elements of the structure are not available, the calculated increase in dead plus
live load on the roof structure is 5.3%. This increase is only slightly greater than the 5% increase
permitted by Section 3403.3 of the 2012 Edition of the International Building Code. However, it is
our opinion that no modifications to the existing structure are required to support the proposed
roofing overlay. RECEIVED

Samafastener-XP is packaged in boxes or plastic buckets in quantities of
250, 500 or 1000. See Technical Data section for lengths and weights.
Installation:
Availability:
For S327 roof membrane attachment, the Samafastener-XP is placed
through the Samadisc, Samadisc-XPN, Samarail or Samabar, through the
membrane, insulation and set into the roof deck with a heavy -duly (4 amp
min.), variable speed (0-2500 rpm), reversible saewgun with clutch release
and a #3 Phillips drive bit. Samafastener-XP must penetrate steel, wooden
plank and concrete roof decks 1 inch (25mm) and the underside of plywood
roof decks % inch (13mm). Pre -drilla 7132" ANSI pilot hole when installing
in structural concrete decks using a hammer or rotary hammer drill. Hole
shall be 1/2" deeper than required embedment for concrete decks. Care
must be taken to not damage the roof deck. Choose the correct fastener
length and do not overdrive or underdrive the Samafastener-XP. Pullout
tests may be required prior to job start. Contact Sika Samafrl's Technical
Department for determination.

Sarnafil G459 Flashing
Membrane
Overview:
Samatit G459 flashing membrane is a heat -weldable roofing membrane for-
mulated for direct exposure to the weather and is produced with an integral
fiberglass mat reinforcement for dimensional stability. G459 flashing mem-
brane is used to flash roof penetrations within Samafil Express, Samafast®.
Engineered and Adhered roofing systems. G459 flashing membrane can
be adhered directly to asphalt -contaminated surfaces.
Composition:
G459 flashing membrane is a high quality product containing PVC resin,
pigments, stabilizers, ultraviolet absorbers, and a fiberglass carrier sheet
Sarnafil G459 Flashing Membrane comes in 1T lengths and is 60 mil (1.5)
Thick. The standard color is white.
Features:
The manufacturing process causes G459 flashing membrane to have
no built-in stress at time of production and to have a fully -encapsulated
reinforcement with no risk of delamination or water -wicking. G459 flashing
membrane is thicker than many competitive products which can improve
weldability and service life. G459 flashing membrane is highly dimensional-
ly stable making it ideal for adhered flashing applications at walls, termina-
tions and penetrations. G459 flashing membrane is resistant to asphalt and
many other rooftop contaminates. Either side of G459 flashing membrane
can be exposed to weather conditions which allows it to cover rooftop con-
taminates or act as a sacrificial layer for contaminates being emitted onto
the roof. Sika Samafil recommends testing for compatibility. Contact Sika
Samafil's Corporate or Regional Offices.
Codes and Approvals:
Sika Samafil's Adhered Systems using 6410 PVC membranes are clas-
sified by Underwriters Laboratories, Inc., Underwriters Laboratories of
Canada, FM Global, Miami -Dade and Florida Building Code. Sika Samafil
membranes also meet the material requirements of International building
code.
Packaging:
G459 flashing membrane rolls are provided individually and are sealed for
shipping. Individual rolls are 168 lbs for 8.56 ft x 65 ft and 83 lbs for 3.25 x
65 ft.
Installation:
G459 flashing membrane is installed by Sika Samafil Authorized Applicators
on walls curbs and certain other penetrations using Sika Samafii's Samacol
adhesives. The seams are then heat welded together by trained operators
using Sika Samafil's hot-air welding equipment
Availability:
G459 flashing membrane is available directly from Sika Samafil Authorized

STEP 3: Installing Rail Panels
Slide rail panels into pivot brackets. Using power drill and 5/16° nut driver bit, secure
posts using #10 x 1' self -drilling drive screws on both sides of post as shown in
Figure 3. (IMPORTANT: Top rail must be 42" above the roof level to meet OSHA
requirements. To simplify installation, measure and cut 2x4 block spacers and position
them under the pivot brackets until rail panels are secured.). Once all rail panels are
in place, securely tighten all pivot bracket connections by wrench. Note: one of the rail
panels (or gate post) is supplied with the gate hinge brackets attached. Locate rail panel
or post with hinge brackets as shown in Figure 6 at bottom of page.
STEP 4: Attaching Gate
Attach gate by aligning hinge brackets with gate hinge brackets on top and secure with
hinge pins, nylon washers, and cotter pins as shown in Figure 4. Adjust hinges to align
gate with rail and install #10 x 1° drive screws. (Note: Gate is hinged on the left side as
shown in Figure 6. To hinge the gate on the right side, remove the hinge assembles from
