Previous BTU Input This project is removing the two existing 20 MMBTU boilers and in their place installing three 5 MMBTU boilers, totaling 15 MMBTU. There is an existing diesel emergency generator in the space as well. Louver Size Required for Boilers In order to meet the requirements of the IFGC, the boilers that will be installed will require louvers that are 3750 Inch^2 or 26 FtA2. The way this is calculated is, 15,000,000 BTUH * (1 InchA2 / 4,000 BTUH) = 3,750 Inch ^2 Emergency Generator Combustion Air The emergency generator has a Detroit turbo diesel 12.1 Liter 8V-92TA 568 HP at 1,800 RPM 1 The generators 12.1 Liter engine = 740 Cubic Inches. Using Hapco Manufacturing CO's exhaust flow chart for a diesel engine with 760 Cu In and 1,800 RPM it was determined that the exhaust flow would be 770 CFM. Applying the multiplication factor of 1.40 for a turbo diesel yields 770 CFM * 1.40 = 1078 CFM. Using Donaldson's engine exhaust flow rate formula the Intake CFM requirements can be obtained: ((Exhaust Temp ("F)+ 460)/540) * CFM Intake = Exhaust Flow. The exhaust flow calculated above with Hapco info and the Donaldson's exhaust information provides standard exhaust temperature for a turbo diesel of 900 F. Rearranging Donaldson's formula yields the following: CFM Intake = Exhaust Flow / ((Exhaust Temp ('F)+ 460)/540). Applying the known values CFM Intake = 1078 CFM / ((900 + 460) / 540) = 428 CFM. Applying a static pressure drop through louvers of 0.1 Inches of Water yields that a 500 CFM flow will require a cross sectional area of 227 Inch^2 =1.58 Ft^2. Applying a safety factor of 15% yields 1.57 Ft^2 *1.15 = 1.82 Ft^2. Rounding up provides 1.9 Ft^2. Total Louver Free Area Required The total area required for outside combustion air louvers is 26 FtA2 + 1.9 Ft^2 = 27.9 Ft^2. According to the IFGC this requirement is for a louver 12" from the top and a louver 12" from the bottom of the space.
