As I understand, your client wishes to replace an existing Despatch 2.8 MBH make up air/shop heater, and change the location of this unit from a lower roof to the upper (main roof of the building). This relocation in of itself will not trigger any upgrade in the building envelope insulation requirements. However, there are three other conditions that would trigger an upgrade to the building envelope. 1. You are adding cooling to the space where no cooling was provided prior and the building envelope is not insulated . 2. The output of the proposed new unit exceeds the aggregate output of the existing heating equipment that the new unit replaces. 3. The proposed new unit and any other unit heaters that serve the space will provide in excess of 8 Btu/(h• sq -ft) In summary, Your application for a mechanical permit must indicate that no cooling of the existing space is proposed, The total output of all heating equipment will be no greater than the output of existing equipment before the installation of the new unit, and the space heating of the completed project will not exceed 8 Btu/ (h • sq -ft). , the new mechanical equipment meets the efficiency requirements of Chapter 14 of the Washington State nonresidential energy code, THEN, there will be no requirement for building envelope insulation upgrade. No cooling of the space is going to be provided. 2. The proposed heating equipment output is significantly less than what is currently in operation. 65% + less 3. Not exceeding 8 btu's / sq. / ft is the issue we have a question on.... SIMMCO 34,500 Sq. /Ft. @ 8 btu's / Sq./ft = 276,000 Btu's Note: We are brining in outside air for process exhaust and not just heating the existing building envelope. In fact we are reducing the make up air by approx. 65%, improving the efficiencies of the system and modifying the location to optimize the overall operation. 4. Current building exhaust volume of the room =18,036 c.f.m. Proposed Make up air = 4,600 c.f.m. The remaining balance will come from non tempered sources. I believe that the code you specifically referenced does not address the total application of what we are trying to achieve by bringing in outside air and heating it for the make up air for the building exhaust volume. We anticipate calculating a 24 degree delta —T and raising the temp to 44 degrees for our make up air Please Advise Th:nk 'ou Danny J. When the duration of the full maximum load does not exceed the period indicated below, the allowable unit stresses shall be increased in the tables as follows: 15 per cent for two months duration, as for snow 25 per cent for seven days duration 331/2 per cent for wind or earthquake 100 per cent for impact 3. Allowable plywood stresses given in Table No. 25-C need not be reduced for permanent loading. If design is on a normal loading basis, all unit stresses for plywood except mod- ulus of elasticity may be increased 10 per cent. Allowable unit stresses given in the tables for normal load- ing conditions may be used without regard to impact if the stress induced by impact does not exceed the allowable unit stress for normal loading. The above increases are not cumulative. For combined durations of loading, the resulting structural members shall not be smaller than required for a longer duration of loading. (f) Horizontal Shear Adjustment. The unit stress in hori- zontal shear in members of rectangular section stressed in flexure shall be computed by use of the following formula: 3R H= 2bh WHERE: R = reaction, pounds, under the following conditions: (1) Distribution of load to adjacent beams through flooring or other members shall be considered. (2) All loads uniform or concentrated, within a distance of the height of the beam from the nearest support, shall be neglected. (3) All concentrated loads located at a distance from the support of one to three times the height of the beam shall be considered as placed at throe times the height of the beam from the support. (g) Adjustments of Allowable Unit Stresses for Joint De- tails. 1. Compression. In joists supported on a ribbon or 'ledger board and spiked to the studding, the allowable stress in compression perpendicular to grain may be increased 50 per cent. Allowable unit stresses in compression perpendicular to grain as set forth in Tables No. 25-A and No. 25-B shall be in- creased in accordance with the following factors for bearing less than six inches (6") in length and located three inches (3") or more from the end of a timber. Length of bearing (inches) % 1 1/ 2 3 4 6 or more Factor 1.75 1.38 1.2.5 1.19 1.13 1.10 1.00 194 1967 EDITION SECTIONS 2501.-2505 For stress under washers or small plates the same factor may be taken as for a bearing, the length of which equals the diameter of the washer. 2. Shear. Allowable unit stresses in shear for joint details shall be 150 per cent of the horizontal shear values as set forth in Tables No. 25-A, No. 25-B, No. 25-D, No. 25-E, No. 25-F, No. 25-C and No. 25-H. In computing the horizontal shear in eccentric joints the effective depth of the member shall be assumed as its actual depth less the distance from the unloaded edge to the nearest edge of the nearest connector. Where bolts alone are used, the distance from the unloaded edge to the center of the nearest bolt shall be subtracted. (h) Holes and Notches. Girders, beams, or joists may be notched or bored in any part of the section within three times the beam depth from either support. Such notches or holes shall not exceed one-fifth of the depth of beam except at point of support and as hereinafter provided. Where girders, beams, or joists are notched at points of support, they shall meet design requirements for net section in bending and in shear. The shear at such point shall not exceed the value calculated by the following formula: 2 bd'H V= 3 h WHERE: d = actual depth of beam at the notch. h = total depth of beam. Where notches or holes are made in other portions of the beam, the net remaining depth of beam shall be used in de- termining the bending strength. (i) Compression on Inclined Surfaces. The unit stress (compression) normal to a plane inclined to the fiber of a wood member shall not exceed that determined from the formula: N= cq Allowable Unit Stresses (Continued) C sine q cos=B Sec. 2505. (a) General. Columns, posts, struts, and other Columns members in compression parallel to grain shall be designed ucturally as provided in this Section. i .) Solid Columns. Simple solid wood columns consist of single piece of sawn lumber or structurally glued -laminated -safe load in pounds per square inch of net cross -sec - 1 -area, for simple columns or other solid members stressed 195 *PO 2511-2513 Wood Diaphragms (Continued) Design of Glued Built-up Members Design of Glued -Laminated Lumber UNIFORM BUILDING CODE limited to a maximum spacing of sixteen inches (16") on cen- ter for vertical diaphragms. In general, panel edges shall bear on the framing members and butt along their center lines. Nails shall be placed not less than three-eighths inch (%") in from the panel edge, not more than twelve inches (12") apart along intermediate supports and six inches (6") ;Jong panel edge -bearings, and shall be firmly driven into the framing members. No unblocked panels less than twelve inches (12") wide shall be used. Sec. 2512. Plywood components shall be designed, fabri- cated and identified in accordance with U.B.C. Standard No. 25-18-67. Sec. 2513. (a) Design and Allowable Unit Stresses. 1. General. Clued -laminated and glued built-up structural mem- bers shall be designed by the applicable engineering formulas used for sawn members, and as otherwise provided without exceeding the allowable unit stresses specified in Section 2504 as modified in this Section. 2. Curvature factor. For the curved portion of members, the allowable stress in bending shall be modified by multi- plication by the following curvature factor: t y 1 — 2000 ( — R WHERE: t = thickness of lamination in inches, R = radius of curvature of a lamination in inches,\ and"t/R" shall not exceed 1/125 for softwoods and 1/100 for hardwoods. No curvature factor shall be applied to stress in the straight portion of an assembly regardless of curvature elsewhere. 3. Radial tension or compression. The radial stress in- duced by a bending moment in a curved rectangular member shall be limited to the allowable stress "SR" when computed by the equation SR = 3M 2R bh WHERE: M = bending moment in inch pounds. R = radius of curvature at center line of member in inches. When "M" is in the direction tending to decrease curvature (increase the radius), the stress is in tension and shall be limited to an allowable stress equal to one-third the allowable stress in shear. 210 1967 EDITION When "M" is in the direction tending to increase curvature (decrease radius), the stress is in compression and shall be limited to the allowable stress in compression perpendicular to grain. 4. Reduction for depth. The allowable unit flexural stresses in rectangular shaped beams over twelve inches (12") in depth shall not exceed the value established by multiplying such stress by the depth factor as determined in the following formula: Fd = .81 H2 + 143 H2 + 88 WHERE: H = Depth of beam, in inches. F = Depth factor. 5. Form factors. The allowable unit flexural stresses in nonprismatic members shall not exceed the value established by multiplying such stress by the form factor determined as follows: BEAM SECTION FORM FACTOR (F!) Circular 1.180 Square (with diagonal vertical) 1.414 Lumber I and Box Beams 0.81 + S .81) WHERE: Ft =- F d Fd = Depth factor determined in accordance with Sec- tion 2513 (a) 4. S = Support factor = P2 (6 — 8P + 3P2) (1— q) -1- q. P = Ratio of depth of compression flange to full depth of beam. q = Ratio of thickness of web or webs to the full width of beam. 6. Tapered faces. No taper shall be permitted on the ten-. sion side of any simple beam. For other members subject to bending, the slope of tapered faces, measured from the tangent to the lamination of the sec- tion under consideration, shall be not steeper than 1:24 on the tension side. EXCEPTIONS: 1. This requirement shall not apply to arches. 2. Taper may be steeper at sections increased in size beyond design requirements for architectural projections. 7. Width. Allowable stresses for the various combinations are based on standard finished widths at the time of grading. Where beam widths are further reduced in finishing such re- duction shall be considered in determination of allowable stresses. Form factor.
