North Hill Apartments paid for two sign permits for their property at 5860 Southcenter Blvd.
The sign code only allows multifamily structures to have one sign. City staff should have only
accepted application for one permit. Thus, they should have only paid $100 for the permit and
not $200. They should receive a refund in the amount of $100.

Dear Mr. Brockmeier:
City staff has reviewed the submitted sign permit application. Multifamily developments are only
permitted to have one sign not exceeding 32 square feet in area (TMC 19.32.110). Thus, the City is
unable to approve two signs for the property. Both of the signs are under 32 square feet and the City will
leave it up to you to determine which one shall remain and which one shall be removed. Please notify
City staff which sign shall be removed.
A refund of $100 for one of the signs has been requested and shall be issued when one of the signs is
removed.
The North Hill apartments may wish to explore other sign options that will make the apartments more
visible. One option is to explore placement of a freestanding sign on the apartment property near
Southcenter Boulevard. It should be noted that there is an extremely large City easement along
Southcenter Boulevard and it may be difficult to locate a sign near the road. Another option may be to
install a larger wall sign (<32 sq. ft) at a more prominent location at the apartment complex.
I have included with this letter a site map that shows the property lines near Southcenter Boulevard.

INSPECTIONS
If the sign needs structural review, the applicant or installer is required to call the Building Division at 431-3670 for footing or bracket
inspections. Footing inspections must take place before concrete is poured. Bracket inspections must take place before sign is
installed.
A structural inspection is required for all signs when installation is complete. The applicant or installer is required to call the Planning
Division at 431-3670 fora final inspection.
It is the responsibility of the installer to obtain the electrical permit and inspections from the Washington State Department of Labor and
Industries at (206) 248-6630.
SIGN PERMIT APPLICATION IS VALID FOR 180 DAYS AFTER ISSUANCE.
